Perth: Former England captain Alastair Cook has lauded Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for his fearless approach, including a cheeky sledge directed at Australia’s Mitchell Starc during the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Jaiswal, who has been making waves with his performances, played a pivotal role in India’s commanding 295-run victory at Optus Stadium, Perth, with a remarkable 161-run knock in the second innings.

Jaiswal, 22, demonstrated remarkable composure throughout the game and even took a dig at veteran pacer Starc. On Day 3, after striking a boundary over square leg with a stunning sweep-slog, Jaiswal defended another delivery from Starc and remarked, “It’s coming slow.”
Alastair Cook Praises Jaiswal’s Confidence
Reacting to the incident on TNT Sports, Cook expressed admiration for Jaiswal’s courage to engage in mind games with one of the world’s premier fast bowlers.
“Sledging Mitchell Starc and telling him he’s bowling slow takes immense confidence, especially at such a young age. I’ve faced Starc, and I can assure you, he doesn’t bowl slow,” Cook remarked. “If I were in his shoes, I’d probably keep quiet and avoid firing him up. But for Jaiswal to do that, it shows his self-belief.”
A Class Act
Cook went on to label Jaiswal a “classy player,” noting his impressive achievements in Test cricket so far. Reflecting on the opener’s stellar series against England earlier this year, where he amassed 712 runs at an average of 89, Cook highlighted Jaiswal’s two centuries and three half-centuries during the campaign.
“He’s already made a name for himself, especially with his consistent performances at the top of the order, which, in my opinion, is the hardest place to bat,” Cook said.
Cook also humorously noted that Jaiswal’s celebrations during his England heroics were bittersweet for the Three Lions but even more satisfying when seen against Australia.
“It’s great to watch him celebrate, especially when it’s against Australia rather than England,” Cook quipped.
Looking Ahead
Jaiswal’s stellar 2024 continues as he gears up for the second Test of the series—a pink-ball encounter in Adelaide starting December 6. All eyes will be on the young left-hander as he looks to maintain his incredible form and help India consolidate their lead in the series.
