Wriddhiman Saha Reflects on India Exit, Says It Wasn’t an Injustice

January 31, 2025

Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha has come to terms with his exit from the Indian Test team, stating that his omission in 2022 was not an act of “injustice.” The 40-year-old, currently playing his final match for Bengal at Eden Gardens in the Ranji Trophy, looked back on his international career and the decision that ended his time with the national squad.

No Hard Feelings Over Exclusion

Saha, widely regarded as one of India’s finest wicketkeepers, was dropped from the team in early 2022 when KS Bharat was chosen as the backup to Rishabh Pant. His exclusion from the squad for the home series against Sri Lanka led to rare public frustration, as he revealed his conversations with head coach Rahul Dravid before being dropped. However, with time, Saha has accepted the decision without resentment.

“I wouldn’t call it injustice—that would be selfish. Maybe it wasn’t just one person’s decision. Perhaps I wasn’t capable enough or didn’t meet expectations, so they made their choice,” Saha said in Kolkata. “If I had performed better, this wouldn’t have happened. I don’t dwell on it—I just take the positives from whatever comes my way.”

Confidence in Fitness and Abilities

Despite being out of India’s plans, Saha remains confident in his skills and physical fitness. He believes he could still have made valuable contributions had he been given the opportunity.

“If I were in the team, I would have contributed with good catches or impactful innings. I’ve given my best for Bengal. In slip fielding, I haven’t dropped a single catch. I’ve enjoyed every moment of it,” he stated.

Over his career, Saha played 40 Tests and nine ODIs, earning a reputation for his impeccable wicketkeeping skills in the longest format.

Retirement and Future Plans

In November, Saha officially announced his retirement through a social media post, a decision he had been contemplating for some time. He revealed that he initially planned to step away from the game last season but was persuaded to continue for one more year by former India captain Sourav Ganguly and his wife, Romi.

“I had planned to retire last season itself. But only because of Dadi (Sourav Ganguly) and my wife Romi, I pushed it to this season. Otherwise, I would have retired by now,” he shared.

As he prepares to bid farewell to professional cricket, Saha remains proud of his achievements and contributions, leaving behind a legacy of skill, dedication, and resilience.
