Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 to Debut Smart Replay Technology: Everything You Need to Know

October 3, 2024

The 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup will be the first International Cricket Council (ICC) tournament to incorporate the innovative Smart Replay system, a technology previously used in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) and England’s The Hundred. This marks a significant milestone as the system makes its debut in international cricket.

In an official statement, the ICC announced that each match of the tournament will have a minimum of 28 cameras for comprehensive coverage. Alongside these visual enhancements, the Decision Review System (DRS) will be available for all matches. The Smart Replay system, supported by Hawk-Eye technology, will allow TV umpires to swiftly access synchronized multi-angle footage, facilitating quicker and more precise decision-making.

What is the Smart Replay System?

The Smart Replay system is designed to accelerate the decision-making process in reviews under the DRS. Traditionally, the TV broadcast director acts as an intermediary between the Hawk-Eye operators and the third umpire, relaying information. However, with the Smart Replay system, the operators and the third umpire will work from the same room, ensuring faster and more seamless communication, which will enhance the speed and accuracy of the review process.

This integration of Smart Replay at the Women’s T20 World Cup reflects the ICC’s continued push to modernize the sport with cutting-edge technology, ensuring better accuracy and an improved viewing experience for fans around the world
