Vinod Kambli Reflects on Health Scare, Family Support, and Cricketing Journey

December 12, 2024

Former India cricketer Vinod Kambli recently opened up about a serious health scare he endured a month ago, shedding light on his ongoing struggles and the unwavering support of his family. The 52-year-old, who is battling a severe urine infection, revealed that he collapsed and had to be rushed to multiple hospitals for treatment.

Health Scare and Recovery

Speaking about the incident, Kambli recounted how his wife Andrea and children, Jesus Cristiano and Johanna, played a crucial role in his recovery. “My head started spinning, and I collapsed. My son picked me up, and my wife rushed me to three different hospitals. She kept telling me, ‘You have to get fit,’” Kambli shared in an interview.

Kambli also expressed gratitude for his close friends, including Ajay Jadeja, who visited him during his recovery. While he feels better now, he acknowledged that the journey to full health is far from over.

Concerns Over Health at Recent Event

Concerns about Kambli’s health gained traction when he appeared frail at the Ramakant Achrekar memorial event, where he reunited with his childhood friend Sachin Tendulkar. Despite his visible struggles, Kambli displayed joy during the event, even singing one of Achrekar’s favorite songs. His emotional connection with Tendulkar was evident as he refused to let go of his friend’s hand.

A Career of Highs and Lows

Kambli’s cricketing career is often regarded as a tale of untapped potential. After a sensational start to his Test career, including back-to-back double centuries in his third and fourth matches, his form waned. By 1995, just two years after his debut, his Test career came to an abrupt end despite boasting an impressive average of over 54 in 17 matches.

Although he continued to represent India in limited-overs cricket until 2000, Kambli’s career was marred by inconsistency and multiple comebacks. Off-field controversies often overshadowed his cricketing achievements, including a much-publicized fallout with Tendulkar in 2009. However, the two have since reconciled and share a close bond once again.

Cherished Memories from Cricket

Reflecting on his playing days, Kambli holds fond memories of his double century against England at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. “That knock of 224 is something I’ll always cherish. We had a fantastic team back then, with players like Anil Kumble, Rajesh Chauhan, and Venkatesh Prasad. Our battles against Sri Lanka were intense, especially against Muttiah Muralitharan,” Kambli reminisced.

The Road Ahead

Kambli’s story serves as a poignant reminder of the highs and lows of life, both on and off the field. With the steadfast support of his family and friends, he is determined to overcome his health challenges and
