Varun Chakaravarthy on Ashwin Comparisons: ‘His Shoes Are Too Big to Fill’

January 25, 2025

Team India’s spinner Varun Chakaravarthy has humbly dismissed comparisons with legendary all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin, acknowledging that he is far from reaching the stature of the veteran cricketer. Ashwin, one of India’s greatest spinners, recently announced his retirement from international cricket midway through the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, leaving a significant void in the team.

Chakaravarthy on Filling Ashwin’s Shoes

Speaking ahead of the second T20I in Chennai, Chakaravarthy admitted that Ashwin’s contributions across all formats make any comparison premature.

“Comparing me to Ashwin is a big statement. He has played in all three formats and achieved so much. I’m just making my comeback and nowhere near a stage where such comparisons are appropriate,” said the 33-year-old spinner.

He further added, “Ashwin has taken over 500 Test wickets, which is extraordinary. His shoes are too big to fill. My focus is on following my process and letting my hard work take me as far as it can.”

Chakaravarthy’s Resurgence as India’s T20I Spinner

After an impressive comeback last year, Chakaravarthy has cemented his place as India’s go-to spinner in the T20I format. In his last eight matches, he has taken 20 wickets at an outstanding average of 11.70, including his best figures of 5/17.

In the opening T20I against England, Chakaravarthy stood out with a brilliant performance, claiming 3/23 and helping India bowl out the opposition for 132.

Plans for the Second T20I in Chennai

As India prepares for the second T20I, Chakaravarthy emphasized that his strategy remains consistent, although he will adapt based on how the batters approach him.

“Every batter has specific plans, and I stick to them. But if they try something different, I rely on instinct to adjust accordingly,” he explained.

Ashwin’s Legacy and Impact

Ashwin’s retirement has left Indian cricket in shock. His final international appearance was the pink-ball Test in Adelaide, where he scored 29 runs and took one wicket. With over 500 Test wickets to his name, Ashwin’s contributions to Indian cricket remain unparalleled.

As Chakaravarthy continues to shine in the T20 format, he remains grounded, focusing on his journey while respecting the legacy left behind by his idol, Ravichandran Ashwin.
