Travis Head Injury Concerns Eased Ahead of Boxing Day Test

December 24, 2024

Australia’s preparations for the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Melbourne Cricket Ground faced a brief scare over Travis Head’s fitness. Head, who has been in scintillating form throughout the series, had raised concerns after a short net session and a prolonged discussion with the team physiotherapist on Tuesday. However, head coach Andrew McDonald assured fans that the star batsman is expected to play.

Injury During Brisbane Test

Head sustained a quad injury during the third Test in Brisbane, where he was seen limping while running between wickets during Australia’s second innings. He did not take the field for the remainder of the day, sparking initial fears about his availability for the Boxing Day Test. Despite these concerns, Head confidently stated after the match—where he earned the Player of the Match award—that he would be fit for the crucial encounter in Melbourne.

Limited Practice Sessions Raise Alarm

The concerns resurfaced when Head skipped Monday’s optional training session at the MCG. Although he participated in gym work and running drills, his absence from batting practice drew attention. On Tuesday, he spent less than 30 minutes in the nets, facing throw-downs from assistant coach Brad Hodge before engaging in a lengthy conversation with physiotherapist Nick Jones. Head also took part in a fielding session but avoided extensive running, raising further speculation about his condition.

McDonald Confirms Head’s Availability

Following Australia’s first full training session at the MCG, McDonald addressed the media to clarify the situation. He expressed confidence in Head’s participation but noted that a few minor evaluations were still pending.

“Travis Head is likely to play, though there are some boxes to tick. The discussion was mainly about his fielding position and his capabilities in that role,” McDonald explained.

Head’s Crucial Role in the Series

Head has been Australia’s standout performer in the series, amassing 409 runs in five innings at an average of 81.80, including two centuries. His contributions have been pivotal, particularly his match-winning knock in Adelaide. With the series tied 1-1 and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy on the line, his presence is vital for Australia as they aim to reclaim the trophy for the first time in over a decade.

Contingency Plan: Josh Inglis

Should Head fail to recover in time, Australia may turn to uncapped batter Josh Inglis to fill the void. However, McDonald’s assurance suggests that the team is optimistic about Head’s availability for the Boxing Day Test.
