Durban – Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva won the toss and chose to bowl first against South Africa in the opening Test of their two-match series at Kingsmead, Durban, on Wednesday. The decision comes in light of overcast skies and a forecast of rain on the first day, making it an important encounter for both teams in their quest to secure a spot in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final.

Sri Lanka Banking on Early Breakthroughs
With conditions expected to favor seamers early on, Sri Lanka aims to exploit South Africa’s relatively fragile batting lineup. “We need to bowl well initially, build pressure, and then capitalize with the bat. Our spinners can play a crucial role later in the game,” said de Silva.
Sri Lanka’s bowling attack includes three pacers—Asitha Fernando, Vishwa Fernando, and Lahiru Kumara—supported by the spin of Prabath Jayasuriya.
South Africa Strengthen Their Lineup
The hosts welcome back skipper Temba Bavuma from injury, replacing Ryan Rickleton in the batting order. Their bowling attack boasts a strong pace lineup featuring Kagiso Rabada, Gerald Coetzee, Marco Jansen, and Wiaan Mulder, with Keshav Maharaj as the sole specialist spinner.
Bavuma emphasized the need for adaptability in his team’s approach. “It’s important to adjust to the conditions, be aware of the weather, and stay focused on the game. The pitch has a good grass covering, so batting first will require a lot of discipline,” he noted.
High Stakes in the WTC Race
Both South Africa and Sri Lanka are still in contention for the WTC final but face the daunting task of winning at least three of their remaining four matches to stay in the hunt. Following this series, South Africa will host Pakistan for two Tests, while Sri Lanka will take on Australia in a two-match series starting in January.
