Sourav Ganguly Backs Virat Kohli for a Strong Comeback in Australia

November 18, 2024

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has expressed confidence in Virat Kohli’s ability to rediscover his form during the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, set to begin on November 22 in Perth. Ganguly believes Kohli thrives in Australian conditions and views this series as an ideal opportunity for the batting ace to make a significant impact.

Kohli’s recent performances in Test cricket have drawn criticism. He has accumulated only 250 runs in 12 innings across six matches this year, averaging a modest 22.72 and failing to register a century. Despite this, Ganguly emphasized Kohli’s stellar track record in Australia, where he has scored 1,352 runs in 13 Tests at an impressive average of 54.08, including six centuries.

“A Champion Batter Ready for the Challenge”

Highlighting the importance of the series, Ganguly remarked, “Virat is a champion batter who has had great success in Australia before. He scored four centuries in 2014 and another in 2018. He knows this might be his last Test tour of Australia, so it’s a massive series for him in every way.”

Kohli’s struggles during the recent home Test series were evident as he managed only 192 runs in 10 innings at an average of 21.33, with a solitary half-century. However, Ganguly is not concerned about Kohli’s form against New Zealand, citing challenging pitch conditions as a factor.

“Australia Offers Better Conditions”

Addressing Kohli’s form, Ganguly stated, “I wouldn’t read too much into the New Zealand series because the pitches weren’t conducive for batting. In Australia, the conditions will be better with good pitches, and I fully expect Virat to shine in this series.”

Support for Sarfaraz Khan

Ganguly also extended his support to young batter Sarfaraz Khan, urging critics not to judge him prematurely. Sarfaraz delivered a remarkable 150-plus score in the first Test against New Zealand but struggled in subsequent matches.

“You can’t dismiss a player without giving him a fair chance. Sarfaraz has been prolific in domestic cricket, earning his spot in the team. Let him play in Australia before passing judgment. He deserves the opportunity to prove himself,” Ganguly remarked.

A Pivotal Series for Kohli and Team India

As the Border-Gavaskar Trophy approaches, expectations are high for Kohli to lead India’s charge with the bat. The series could not only revive Kohli’s form but also mark a fitting conclusion to his illustrious Test career in Australia. With Ganguly’s vote of confidence, all eyes will be on Kohli to deliver yet another memorable performance Down Under.
