Shubman Gill Suffers Finger Injury Ahead of Perth Test, Doubtful for Series Opener

November 16, 2024

Team India may face a significant setback ahead of the first Test against Australia, as opener Shubman Gill sustained a finger injury during the ongoing match simulation against India A at the WACA, Perth. Fielding in the slips on the second day, Gill hurt his finger, raising doubts about his availability for the match starting on November 22.

According to a Times of India report, while the injury is confirmed, the medical team is closely monitoring Gill, and no decision has been made about his participation in the series opener.

Injury Concerns Mount for India

Gill’s injury follows a string of fitness scares for the Indian team. KL Rahul was hit on the elbow during the first day of the match simulation and did not return to bat further. Additionally, Virat Kohli underwent scans after a minor issue but has been declared fit, with no concerns regarding his availability.

“Yes, Shubman Gill is injured, but it is too early to rule him out of the opening Test. The medical team is keeping a close watch on him,” a source was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

Gill, 25, had recently missed a Test against New Zealand due to neck stiffness but returned for the following matches, showcasing strong form with a notable 90 in Mumbai.

Update on Virat Kohli

The Times of India also reported that Kohli, 36, is in good health after his precautionary scans. “Virat Kohli is absolutely fine. He batted in the match simulation without discomfort and even practiced in the nets after getting out,” the report confirmed.

Rohit Sharma’s Availability Uncertain

India’s skipper Rohit Sharma, who welcomed his second child on Friday, is still in Mumbai, raising questions about his presence for the first Test. While he has been training, no concrete timeline has been set for his travel to Australia.

If Rohit is unavailable, vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah is likely to lead the team in Perth. Additionally, KL Rahul is the frontrunner to open the innings alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Match Preparation

The Indian team initially planned a practice match against India A but opted for a match simulation instead. The squad has been rigorously training at the WACA to prepare for the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which promises to be a fiercely contested series.

As the first Test looms, the fitness of key players like Gill and the return of Rohit Sharma will be critical for India’s success in the high-stakes series.
