Mumbai all-rounder Shardul Thakur was rushed to a hospital in Lucknow after battling through a high fever during Day 2 of the ongoing Irani Cup match between Mumbai and Rest of India. Despite running a fever of 102 degrees, Thakur showcased tremendous grit, playing a vital knock of 36 runs in a 73-run partnership with Sarfaraz Khan, according to a report by The Indian Express.

Battling Illness While at the Crease
Thakur had shown symptoms of illness as early as Day 1, complaining of a mild fever. His condition, however, deteriorated after nearly two hours of batting on Day 2. The Mumbai all-rounder had to take two breaks during his innings, where he received treatment from the team’s medical staff.
Despite feeling weak, Thakur insisted on continuing his innings, determined to support his team. His 36 runs came off 59 balls, including one six and four boundaries. He played with caution, choosing to avoid risky shots, while partnering with Sarfaraz Khan, who remained unbeaten on 221 by the end of the day.
Hospitalization and Medical Tests
After his valiant innings, the Mumbai team management decided to take Thakur to a local hospital in Lucknow for further medical attention. He was kept under observation overnight, with doctors conducting tests for illnesses such as malaria and dengue. His condition will be re-evaluated before determining his fitness for Day 3 of the match.
A source revealed that Thakur had been feeling weak throughout the day but remained determined to bat. His decision to play despite his worsening health highlights his dedication to the team’s cause.
A Return to Domestic Cricket
This match marks Thakur’s first domestic appearance since undergoing foot surgery in London earlier this year. He had sustained the injury during the previous Ranji Trophy season but continued to play through the pain, significantly contributing to Mumbai’s success in winning the title. Unfortunately, the injury resurfaced during India’s tour of South Africa, leading to his surgery.
As Thakur works on regaining his form in the domestic season, his performance will be closely monitored, especially with the Australia series on the horizon later this year. His participation in the Ranji Trophy will be crucial as he looks to solidify his place in the national team ahead of the upcoming tour Down Under.
