Injury Rules Samson Out for 4-6 Weeks
Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has been ruled out for a significant period after sustaining a fractured right index finger during the fifth T20I against England at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. The injury, caused by a Jofra Archer delivery clocking close to 150 kmph, has sidelined him for approximately 4-6 weeks, forcing him to miss Kerala’s upcoming Ranji Trophy quarterfinal against Jammu and Kashmir, scheduled from February 8-12 in Pune.

Rehabilitation at NCA Before IPL 2025 Return
As per a report by PTI, Samson has already returned to his hometown, Thiruvananthapuram, and will undergo rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) before resuming training. In line with BCCI protocols, he must receive medical clearance from the NCA before making a competitive return. Given his recovery timeline, the Rajasthan Royals captain is expected to make his comeback during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
A source quoted by PTI stated, “Samson has fractured his right index finger. It will take him five to six weeks before he can resume proper nets. So there is no chance of him playing the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal for Kerala.” The source further added, “In all likelihood, his comeback will happen in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals.”
Samson’s Struggles Against England in T20I Series
Heading into the T20I series against England, Samson was in stellar form, having scored three centuries in his last five T20I appearances. However, he failed to replicate that success, managing only 51 runs in five matches. His highest score was 26 in the opening T20I at Kolkata. He repeatedly fell while attempting to play short-pitched deliveries from England’s pace attack, which included Archer, Mark Wood, and Saqib Mahmood.
Omissions from ODI Squad and Champions Trophy
Despite being a contender for India’s ODI squad, Samson was not included for the three-match ODI series against England or the upcoming Champions Trophy. His next possible opportunity to represent Team India could come in August, when India tours Bangladesh.
Earlier, he had also missed the Vijay Hazare Trophy after skipping a preparatory camp. Now, his focus will be on regaining fitness and making a strong comeback in the IPL 2025 season.
