Sanjay Bangar Suggests Rohit Sharma Bat at No. 3 to Regain Form

December 21, 2024

India skipper Rohit Sharma has been going through a tough phase with the bat, struggling to score consistently in Test cricket. Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar has analyzed the issue and offered a potential solution to help Rohit rediscover his rhythm. Bangar believes spending more time in the middle and possibly batting at No. 3 could help the Indian captain turn things around.

Lean Patch Continues for Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma, known for his elegant stroke play, has hit a rough patch in the longest format of the game. The 37-year-old has managed just one half-century in his last 13 Test innings. His performances on the Australian tour have been particularly concerning, where he recorded only one double-digit score—10 runs in three innings. Rohit’s struggles against quality pace bowling have been evident, with errors creeping into his game.

A Shift in Batting Position?

Speaking to Star Sports, Bangar suggested a shift in Rohit’s batting position as a potential remedy. “Spending time in the middle is key for any batter to regain confidence. If the team management wants to strengthen the bowling lineup, Rohit can consider moving to No. 3,” Bangar said.

This move could provide Rohit with more time to settle at the crease before facing the new ball. Additionally, Bangar pointed out technical issues in Rohit’s game, especially his timing against pacers. “He seems to be a bit late on his shots, including his signature pull shot. When he misses that shot, it’s a sign that something isn’t quite right,” Bangar observed.

Technical Adjustments Needed

Bangar also highlighted the importance of preparation and early positioning. “Rohit needs to stabilize himself early in his innings. If he gets into position a little sooner, he’ll have the time to execute his shots effectively. The Australians have targeted him with short balls, but he has struggled to connect with them.”

The former batting coach stressed that batting is often about rhythm and confidence. “Sometimes, just playing two or three good shots can bring back a batter’s rhythm. It’s not always about practice sessions; the confidence can return during the innings itself,” he explained.

India’s WTC Final Hopes

India, currently competing in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, need to win both remaining matches to secure a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final for the third consecutive time. A return to form for Rohit Sharma could significantly boost the team’s chances.

Bangar concluded by emphasizing that rhythm is the key to Rohit’s resurgence. “Batting is a game of feel. Once a batter feels their legs moving properly and their shots connecting, the confidence automatically returns.”

As India aims for a spot in the WTC final, Rohit Sharma’s return to form could be pivotal for the team’s success.
