The iconic Wankhede Stadium celebrated its 50th anniversary on Sunday with a grand event attended by several legends of Indian cricket. Players from past and present, including Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Ravi Shastri, Rohit Sharma, and Ajinkya Rahane, shared fond memories of their time at the historic venue.

During the event, a seating arrangement was divided into three sections: right, center, and left. Ravi Shastri, upon taking the stage, chose a seat on the left. However, when Indian captain Rohit Sharma arrived, he made a thoughtful gesture by requesting Shastri to move to the center, a mark of respect for Shastri’s contributions to Indian cricket.
The moment, captured on video, has been widely praised on social media, with fans applauding Rohit’s humility and respect. Rohit, who played under Shastri’s tenure as head coach, shares a close bond with the former cricketer and coach.
Rohit Sharma’s Message for Fans
At the same event, Rohit addressed fans and shared his determination for the upcoming Champions Trophy. Speaking to the crowd, he said, “We will try everything we can to bring back the trophy to Wankhede.”
The Wankhede Stadium has witnessed many historic moments in Indian cricket, including celebrations for the T20 World Cup victory last year. The BCCI marked the occasion with a grand parade across Marine Drive, where fans turned up in huge numbers to celebrate the team’s success.
Rohit’s Preparations for England Series
Following a disappointing tour of Australia, where he managed only 31 runs across five innings, Rohit has been training with the Mumbai state team. The Indian captain is working to regain form ahead of the limited-overs series against England, which includes five T20Is followed by three ODIs.
Although Rohit retired from T20Is in 2024, he continues to lead the Indian side in ODIs and will be looking to make an impact during the series against England, which will serve as crucial preparation for the Champions Trophy.
