“Rishabh Pant Will Rewrite IPL History”: LSG Owner Sanjiv Goenka’s Bold Prediction

January 21, 2025

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) owner Sanjiv Goenka has high hopes for Rishabh Pant, predicting a long and successful future for the dynamic wicketkeeper-batter. Goenka envisions Pant leading the team for “14-15 years” and winning “at least five IPL titles.” Comparisons with iconic leaders like MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma were inevitable as Goenka expressed his confidence in the 27-year-old star.

Pant: LSG’s Game-Changer

After a fierce bidding war in last year’s mega auction, Rishabh Pant became the most expensive player in IPL history, fetching a record-breaking ₹27 crore. With LSG seeking a fresh start following three average seasons under KL Rahul’s leadership, Pant emerged as the ideal candidate to steer the team toward success.

“Surely, Rishabh Pant will play for us for at least 14-15 years, and we hope he brings home five IPL titles during that time,” said Goenka. While the duration of Pant’s tenure might be an optimistic projection, the faith shown in him highlights LSG’s belief in his leadership abilities.

The Next Dhoni or Rohit?

Goenka didn’t shy away from drawing comparisons with IPL legends MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma. Both captains have led their respective teams, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI), to five IPL titles each. Goenka boldly claimed that Pant would soon join this elite league.

“People talk about MI and CSK being the most successful franchises, and rightfully so. Mahi and Rohit are extraordinary leaders. But mark my words—10 years from now, it will be Mahi, Rohit, and Rishabh,” he stated.

Goenka believes Pant has the hunger and passion to become not only one of the IPL’s greatest captains but also one of its most accomplished players. “I haven’t seen many players with his level of determination. He will prove to be the best player and captain in IPL history,” he added.

A Proven Leader

Pant is no stranger to captaincy. He led the Delhi Capitals (DC) for three seasons, achieving a win percentage of 56% after securing 24 victories in 43 matches. Initially handed the captaincy in 2021 due to Shreyas Iyer’s injury, Pant showcased his leadership capabilities and tactical acumen, earning widespread praise.

Taking on the captaincy at LSG will bring additional pressure, especially given his record-breaking price tag. However, Goenka dismissed concerns about the financial aspect, saying, “The price tag became irrelevant the moment the auction ended. Every team spends ₹120 crores; what matters is the value the player brings to the team.”

A Unique Thought Process

Goenka also highlighted Pant’s unconventional thinking as a significant advantage. “Rishabh’s thought process is different from the conventional. That uniqueness sets him apart as a natural leader. I see him becoming the greatest captain the IPL has ever seen,” he said.

A Fierce Auction Battle

Several franchises, including Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore, vied for Pant’s services, but LSG’s determination secured his move from Delhi to Lucknow. “I was clear from the start that I wanted him, and I made sure we got him,” Goenka revealed.

The Path to Greatness

As LSG begins a new chapter with Pant at the helm, expectations are sky-high. The southpaw’s passion, talent, and innovative mindset make him a strong contender to become one of the most celebrated captains in IPL history. With the upcoming season just around the corner, all eyes will be on Rishabh Pant as he aims to lead Lucknow Super Giants to unprecedented glory.
