Ricky Ponting Confident of Australia’s Victory in 3rd Test at Gabba

December 14, 2024

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, widely regarded as one of the most insightful voices in cricket, has weighed in on the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia. Speaking on the ICC Review show, Ponting expressed confidence in Australia’s ability to secure a victory at Brisbane’s Gabba and take a 2-1 lead in the series.

Ponting Backs Australia’s Momentum

Ponting pointed to Australia’s strong form and familiarity with Gabba conditions as key factors favoring the hosts. Reflecting on the team’s dominant 10-wicket victory in Adelaide, he remarked, “The first two matches were completely one-sided in different ways. I believe this match will be more competitive, but I still think Australia has the edge.”

While India opened the series with a commanding 295-run victory in Perth, Australia responded strongly under the lights in Adelaide, leveraging their pacers to even the series at 1-1.

The Gabba Factor

The former skipper also highlighted the historical advantage Australia enjoys at the Gabba, despite their fortress being breached twice in recent years. India famously ended Australia’s 30-year unbeaten streak at the venue in 2021, followed by the West Indies securing a win earlier this year in a pink-ball match.

“Historically, teams that win the toss in Brisbane bat first to capitalize on the pitch conditions early on. Later in the match, the wicket tends to favor bowlers more, making it critical to build a strong first-innings total,” Ponting explained.

India’s Confidence vs. Australia’s Track Record

Ponting acknowledged India’s confidence stemming from their recent success at the Gabba but maintained that Australia’s overall track record at the venue gives them the upper hand. “India’s performances at the Gabba in 2021 and Australia’s recent loss there might inspire the visitors, but Australia has lost only twice in over 40 years at this ground. Based on recent form and history, I’m backing Australia to win,” he added.

A Decisive Contest

As both teams prepare for the third Test, the stakes are high with the series tied at 1-1. While India seeks to replicate their Gabba heroics, Ponting believes the hosts have the depth and determination to reclaim their dominance at the iconic venue.
