Afghanistan’s star spinner Rashid Khan made a sensational comeback to Test cricket, delivering a “Player of the Match” performance to lead his team to a 72-run victory over Zimbabwe in the second and final Test at Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo. His remarkable bowling efforts, with figures of 4/94 in the first innings and 7/66 in the second, secured the series win for Afghanistan.

Rashid Reflects on His Journey Back
After a three-year absence from red-ball cricket, Rashid returned to the longest format following back surgery, overcoming significant challenges to make an immediate impact. Speaking about his performance, Rashid expressed his gratitude for the collective effort of his teammates.
“Returning to Test cricket after such a long gap, especially post-surgery, was tough,” Rashid shared. “It was the team effort that made the difference, particularly the way our batters stepped up in the second innings to bring us back into the game.”
Key Contributions from Rahmat Shah and Izmatullah
Rashid highlighted the crucial roles played by Rahmat Shah and debutant Izmatullah in Afghanistan’s second innings. Despite challenging conditions, their partnership helped stabilize the innings, creating a platform for Rashid to dominate with the ball.
“The way Rahmat and Izmat batted was exceptional,” Rashid said. “Izmat’s resilience after being dismissed for a duck on debut and getting hit was inspiring. He showed incredible determination to bat for the country under pressure.”
Adapting to Red-Ball Cricket Again
Rashid admitted that transitioning back to Test cricket after such a long hiatus was not easy. Having not bowled with a red ball for three years, he relied on his experience and discipline to deliver match-winning spells.
“It’s about keeping things simple and adapting to the conditions,” Rashid explained. “Length is key in red-ball cricket, whether I’m bowling faster or slower. Adjusting quickly and maintaining discipline made the difference.”
Afghanistan’s Test Cricket Growth
This victory underscores Afghanistan’s steady progress in Test cricket. The visitors won the two-match series 1-0, with Rahmat Shah earning the “Player of the Series” award for his outstanding batting performances, including a double century in the first Test.
In the second Test, Afghanistan set Zimbabwe a target of 277 runs in the final innings. The hosts were bowled out for 205, with Craig Ervine top-scoring with 53. Notable contributions also came from Sikandar Raza, Ben Curran, Sean Williams, and Joylord Gumbie, but their efforts fell short as Afghanistan’s bowlers dominated.
Rashid and the Bowlers Shine
Rashid’s match-winning seven-wicket haul in the final innings was supported by Zia-Ur-Rehman, who took two wickets. Earlier in the third innings, Afghanistan posted 363 runs, thanks to vital contributions from Rahmat Shah and Izmatullah.
For Zimbabwe, Blessing Muzarabani was the standout bowler, claiming six wickets, while Richard Ngarava and Sikandar Raza chipped in with three and one wicket, respectively.
A Triumphant Return
Rashid Khan’s heroic performance and Afghanistan’s team effort in Bulawayo mark an important milestone in their Test cricket journey. With this series win, Afghanistan continues to assert its presence on the global stage, fueled by Rashid’s brilliance and the team’s growing resilience.
