Gqeberha – Rashid Khan expressed his desire to lead MI Cape Town with the same approach he used while captaining Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup 2024. He credited his improved leadership this season to his growing familiarity with the team, which played a crucial role in securing a spot in the SA20 playoffs.
After struggling in the past two seasons, MI Cape Town has turned things around this year, topping the points table with 30 points from nine matches heading into the playoffs.

A Captain’s Vision and Growth
The 26-year-old led Afghanistan to a historic victory over Australia in the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup 2024, helping them reach the semifinals. Inspired by that experience, Rashid aimed to replicate his leadership style at MI Cape Town.
“I wanted to lead MI Cape Town the way I led Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup. Coach Robbie Peterson also encouraged me to take this approach,” Rashid said during a media interaction ahead of the Qualifier 1 against Paarl Royals.
Reflecting on his captaincy, Rashid emphasized the importance of clear communication. “It’s crucial for the players to understand what the captain is thinking and for the captain to know what’s going through their minds. I feel I could have done better in my first season, but leadership is a continuous learning process.”
A Team Effort Behind MI Cape Town’s Resurgence
Rashid highlighted that every player has stepped up and taken responsibility this season, making a significant difference compared to previous campaigns.
“In the last two years, we played good cricket but couldn’t finish strong. This year, we have managed to do that well. It’s been a complete team effort—whenever someone got an opportunity, they made it count. Even if a player had just one or two balls to make an impact, they delivered for the team,” he said.
The bowlers have also played a crucial role in MI Cape Town’s success. “Everyone has contributed with the ball as well. The biggest change this season is that we are enjoying ourselves, having fun, and not stressing about the results,” Rashid added.
The Importance of a Leadership Group
Rashid emphasized the significance of having a strong leadership group within the team to support the captain.
“It’s very important for a captain to have experienced players around for guidance. Leading a team as an overseas player is not easy, but having leadership support made my job simpler. It’s not just about me making decisions—it’s about listening to those who have played extensively in these conditions. Their input is invaluable,” he explained.
With a well-balanced team, strong leadership, and a newfound sense of confidence, MI Cape Town is now a formidable force in the SA20 playoffs, aiming for championship glory under Rashid Khan’s leadership.
