Familiarity and Leadership: The Key to Success
Rashid Khan, captain of MI Cape Town, has credited his leadership growth and team familiarity for the franchise’s remarkable turnaround in SA20 2024. Inspired by his leadership role with Afghanistan during the T20 World Cup, Rashid aimed to bring the same approach to MI Cape Town, helping them secure a top spot in the league standings.

After struggling in the previous two seasons, MI Cape Town now leads the points table with 30 points from nine matches, heading into the playoffs. Rashid, who led Afghanistan to a historic victory over Australia in the 2024 T20 World Cup Super Eight stage, emphasized how his experience as a leader has helped shape his approach this season.
A Clear Vision and Effective Communication
Reflecting on his leadership style, Rashid highlighted the importance of team cohesion and understanding each player’s role.
“I wanted to lead MI Cape Town the way I led Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup. Coach Robbie Peterson also encouraged me to take this approach,” Rashid said in a press conference ahead of the Qualifier 1 clash against Paarl Royals.
“This year, I spent more time with the players, which helped me understand how to utilize each bowler at different stages. Communication was key—making sure players knew the captain’s mindset and that I understood theirs.”
Team Effort and Finishing Games Well
One of the major differences this season, according to Rashid, has been the team’s ability to capitalize on crucial moments and close out games effectively.
“In the past two years, we played good cricket but struggled to finish strong. This year, we have managed to get those small but important things right,” he explained.
Rashid credited every player for stepping up when needed. “Everyone has taken responsibility. Whether it’s batting, bowling, or playing a small but impactful role, each contribution has mattered. That’s been a huge shift for us.”
Bowlers Making an Impact
The bowling unit has also been a crucial factor in MI Cape Town’s dominance. Rashid praised the bowlers for consistently delivering strong performances throughout the season.
“Every bowler has contributed significantly. The difference this year is that we’re enjoying our cricket without worrying too much about results. That mindset has helped us perform better,” he added.
Building a Strong Leadership Group
As an overseas captain, Rashid acknowledged the challenges of leading a team in unfamiliar conditions. However, he highlighted the importance of having a leadership group within the squad.
“For a captain, having a leadership group is crucial. You need that support system, especially when leading a team in a foreign league,” Rashid said.
“It’s not just about my decisions. I listen to the experienced local players because they understand the conditions better. Their insights have been invaluable and have made my job easier.”
Looking Ahead to the Playoffs
With MI Cape Town in a strong position heading into the playoffs, Rashid remains focused on maintaining the team’s momentum. He believes their success has come from playing fearless cricket and sticking to their roles.
As the SA20 playoffs approach, MI Cape Town will look to continue their dominant run under Rashid’s leadership, with hopes of clinching their first-ever title.
