KL Rahul’s solid performance in the opening Test against Australia in Perth has sparked a debate about India’s batting order for the second Test, set to take place in Adelaide on December 6. With captain Rohit Sharma expected to return, former India batter Cheteshwar Pujara has shared his thoughts on how the team should structure its lineup to maintain their dominance in the series.

Rahul’s Resurgence at the Top
KL Rahul showcased his adaptability in Perth, stepping up as an opener alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal in Rohit Sharma’s absence. While the first innings saw him score a modest 26 off 74 balls, the second innings was a testament to his resilience, as he played a determined knock of 77 runs off 176 balls. His opening partner Jaiswal also shone, smashing a brilliant 161 off 297 balls. Adding to India’s stellar batting display, Virat Kohli scored a commanding unbeaten century, securing India’s emphatic 295-run victory.
Pujara’s Suggestions for Gambhir and Team Management
With Rohit Sharma returning to the playing XI, head coach Gautam Gambhir faces the challenge of deciding Rahul’s batting position. Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Cheteshwar Pujara suggested that if Rohit resumes his role as an opener, KL Rahul should be slotted at No. 3, emphasizing that batting higher up the order suits Rahul’s game.
“If Rohit opens, KL should bat at No. 3. That’s the best position for him because it aligns with his style of play. We shouldn’t tinker too much with the batting order,” Pujara advised. He also added that if the current opening combination of Rahul and Jaiswal is retained, Rohit could consider batting at No. 3, with Shubman Gill coming in at No. 5.
Gill’s Expected Return and Ideal Role
Shubman Gill, who missed the first Test due to injury, is likely to be available for the second match. Pujara suggested deploying Gill at No. 5, where he could balance the lineup effectively. “At No. 5, Gill could handle the new ball if the team loses early wickets but would also be in a position to play his natural attacking game if he comes in after 25-30 overs,” Pujara noted.
Bowling Department Earns Praise
India’s bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Harshit Rana, and Washington Sundar, were instrumental in their victory in Perth. Pujara lauded their efforts, especially Sundar, who contributed with both bat and ball. “Washington Sundar offers depth in batting, which can be crucial for the lower-middle order. While he started slowly with the ball, he improved and picked up some key wickets,” Pujara said. He backed Sundar over experienced spinners like R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja for the second Test.
India’s Game Plan for Adelaide
As India gears up for the Adelaide Test, the team management faces critical decisions about the batting order and the bowling attack. With a 1-0 lead in the series, Rohit Sharma’s return and Shubman Gill’s potential inclusion could provide additional firepower as India looks to extend their advantage.
