Mumbai’s opening batter, Prithvi Shaw, has shown a determined response to his recent omission from the Ranji Trophy squad, channeling his efforts into improving his fitness. After being left out of Mumbai’s squad for the Elite Group A Ranji Trophy match against Odisha, Shaw was spotted running on a track near the MCA-BKC ground in Mumbai. According to a report by Mid-Day, the 24-year-old worked through intense sprinting and running drills under the guidance of Mumbai Cricket Association’s trainer, Amogh Pandit. During the session, Shaw also acknowledged his teammates fielding near the boundary line.

Shaw’s exclusion from the 16-member Mumbai team, selected for the third Ranji Trophy match against Tripura, has been a turning point, prompting him to focus on his conditioning. The Sanjay Patil-led selection committee chose to exclude Shaw from back-to-back matches, leaving him eager to return in better form.
Recently, former Australian cricketer and India head coach Greg Chappell reached out to Shaw with a motivational letter. Chappell’s message conveyed encouragement and guidance, suggesting that this phase could be a pivotal moment in Shaw’s career.
Key Excerpts from Greg Chappell’s Letter
Chappell addressed Shaw’s recent challenges, stating, “Hi Prithvi, I know you’re going through a tough period after being out of the Mumbai team. It’s natural to feel frustrated, but remember, it’s often in moments like these that athletes find the strength that shapes their careers and character.”
Reflecting on Shaw’s early cricketing days, Chappell recalled, “I remember watching you play for India’s under-19 team; your talent and spark were undeniable. Those of us who see your potential are still closely following your journey, knowing that your best days lie ahead.”
Chappell cited legendary cricketer Don Bradman as an example, highlighting how even the greatest have faced setbacks. “Even legends like Bradman were dropped and had to earn their way back. What set them apart was not avoiding obstacles but how they tackled them.”
He also advised Shaw to prioritize his health and fitness, saying, “Take care of your body, rest well, and build the strength and focus you need. The door back to the Indian team remains open, but it requires a commitment to growth and change.”
Shaw’s Future in Cricket
Following his recent release by the Delhi Capitals, it remains uncertain whether any team will select him in the upcoming IPL mega auction. Shaw, who debuted for India in 2018, has played in five Tests, six ODIs, and one T20I, accumulating 528 runs across formats. Although his early Test performances were promising, Shaw has struggled to solidify his spot, with his last appearance coming against Australia in Adelaide in 2020.
Shaw’s recent efforts indicate his commitment to regaining his form and fitness, signaling his determination to work his way back into the squad and possibly revitalize his career trajectory.
