PCB Seeks ICC Clarification on India’s Refusal to Travel for Champions Trophy

November 11, 2024

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is set to approach the International Cricket Council (ICC) for clarity regarding India’s decision to skip the upcoming Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Although the ICC has informed the PCB that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will not be sending its team to Pakistan, there has been no mention of a potential hybrid model to accommodate both teams, according to a reliable source within the PCB.

In the previous Asia Cup, a hybrid model was employed where India’s matches were held in Sri Lanka while the rest of the tournament took place in Pakistan. For the Champions Trophy, speculation suggests that Dubai may host India’s matches if an agreement is reached, as the tournament is scheduled for February next year.

The PCB plans to consult with its legal team before sending a formal email to the ICC, requesting more details regarding India’s refusal and seeking alternative options. “The PCB is assessing the situation and has not yet made any decisions about its next steps. The board is also in consultation with the government for guidance if needed,” the source added.

The PCB is waiting on policy direction from the Pakistani government, which could influence its approach in discussions with the ICC. There are concerns that India’s absence could lead to legal complications for the ICC, as the governing body has contractual obligations to sponsors and broadcasters, ensuring that top cricketing nations participate in its tournaments.

India has not visited Pakistan since the 2008 Mumbai attacks, and the teams now only meet in ICC events. The PCB’s request for clarification could impact future tournament arrangements as both boards work with the ICC to resolve the issue.
