Former world number two Paula Badosa celebrated her return to top form by winning her first title in over two years at the Washington Open. Badosa, who reached her career-high ranking in 2022 after winning the Sydney title, had struggled with various issues, including a persistent back injury.
After returning to the tour in January, Badosa was advised by doctors to avoid playing on hardcourts to prevent further complications. Despite this, she persevered and clinched her fourth career title with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Czech player Marie Bouzkova in the WTA 500 hardcourt event in Washington, D.C.
“One year ago I was on the couch, so it’s a big difference now. I’m an athlete again … winning a title after two years,” Badosa shared with reporters.
Her journey to victory included impressive wins over former Grand Slam champions Emma Raducanu and Sofia Kenin, positioning her well for the upcoming U.S. Open starting on August 26. Badosa, who rose to number 40 in the world rankings following her win, expressed confidence in her form.
“I felt before I was at a pretty high level because I’m playing against the best players and I’m close,” she said. “I think I’m on my way. I don’t want to say I’m back because I don’t know. I want to test myself a bit more.”
