Paris 2024 Olympics: US Women’s Basketball Triumphs Over Japan; Nigeria Delivers Upset Against Australia

July 30, 2024

The U.S. women’s basketball team began their Paris 2024 Olympic campaign with a commanding 102-76 victory over Japan on Monday night. With this win, the Americans continue their impressive streak, now at 56 consecutive Olympic victories stretching back to the 1992 Barcelona Games.

A’ja Wilson led the charge with 24 points, while Breanna Stewart contributed 22 points. This game marks the latest in a series of dominant performances by the U.S., who previously faced Japan in the Tokyo Games’ gold medal match, emerging victorious 90-75.

Japan, despite their significant size disadvantage, attempted to stay competitive with a high-paced game plan and frequent three-point shots. For the first 17 minutes, Japan managed to keep the score close, trailing 37-32. However, the U.S. pulled ahead with a strong finish to the first half, including a crucial three-point play by Wilson.

Strong Third Quarter Secures Victory

The American team solidified their lead during the third quarter. Chelsea Gray’s precise passing helped set up easy scores for Wilson, effectively putting the game out of reach for Japan. With a dominant performance on the boards, where they out-rebounded Japan 56-27, the U.S. team ensured that Japan never posed a serious threat after halftime.

This game was notable for Brittney Griner’s return to international play after her release from a Russian prison in 2022. Griner, who was instrumental in the 2021 gold medal game with 30 points, scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds in this match. Sabrina Ionescu and Kelsey Plum each added 11 points for the Americans.

Injury Scare for Team USA

The game featured a concerning moment when Kahleah Copper collided with Japan’s Rui Machida in the second quarter, resulting in Copper being temporarily sidelined. Fortunately, she returned in the fourth quarter and appeared to be in good condition.

Nigeria’s Stunning Victory Over Australia

In a surprising turn of events, Nigeria secured their first Olympic basketball win since 2004, defeating Australia 75-62 in their group play opener. Ezinne Kalu was instrumental in the victory, scoring 17 of her 19 points in the first half, including making her initial four three-pointers.

Despite not qualifying for the 2016 Rio Games and struggling in Tokyo, Nigeria, ranked 12th in the world, managed to topple third-ranked Australia, led by Sandy Brondello of the WNBA’s New York Liberty. Promise Amukamara added 14 points for Nigeria, Amy Okonkwo contributed 13, and Murjanatu Musa finished with 11 points.

This unexpected result highlights Nigeria’s return to form and adds an exciting element to the ongoing Olympic basketball competition.
