“No One Is Bigger Than Cricket”: Yograj Singh Urges Kohli, Rohit to Play Domestic Matches

January 20, 2025

Former cricketer Yograj Singh, father of Yuvraj Singh, has advised Indian cricket stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to participate in domestic cricket to regain form and inspire young players. Both Kohli and Rohit endured a tough Test series during India’s 1-3 defeat in Australia, leading to calls for them to return to Ranji Trophy cricket.

Yograj emphasized that no cricketer, not even legends like Viv Richards or Don Bradman, is bigger than the game. He believes that by playing domestic cricket, senior players can not only refine their skills but also provide confidence and learning opportunities for younger teammates.

“You can never become bigger than the game. Neither Viv Richards nor Don Bradman was bigger than cricket, and no one else can be either. Players should return from tours and play domestic cricket. When Test players participate in domestic matches, it boosts the confidence of youngsters sharing the field with them,” Yograj told ANI.

Rohit Set for Ranji Action, Kohli to Miss Delhi’s Match

Rohit Sharma has confirmed his participation in Mumbai’s next Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir. However, Virat Kohli, who last played a Ranji Trophy match in 2012, will miss Delhi’s upcoming game due to a neck sprain. Kohli’s absence has drawn attention, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently made Ranji Trophy participation mandatory for senior players.

Other notable absences include KL Rahul, who is recovering from an elbow injury.

Yuvraj Singh’s Example

Highlighting his son Yuvraj Singh’s dedication to domestic cricket, Yograj recalled how the former all-rounder consistently played Ranji matches whenever he was not part of the Indian squad. He urged Kohli and Rohit to follow suit, emphasizing that playing in live matches is far more beneficial than practice sessions.

“Whenever Yuvi wasn’t in the Indian team, he would play Ranji Trophy. It’s crucial for players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to do the same during breaks. There should also be fitness camps for the players. Nothing happens in the nets; everything happens in the center,” he added.

Yograj’s comments have sparked discussions about the importance of domestic cricket for maintaining form and nurturing young talent, with fans and experts alike echoing his sentiments.
