“He was earning five dollars an hour and surviving on cheap chicken schnitzels,” Brendan said, adding that their tough upbringing on farms prepared Nathan for the grind of professional cricket.
Lyon’s role as a curator eventually brought him to the Adelaide Oval, where his performances for South Australia began to draw attention. His rise was meteoric, and after just four first-class games, Lyon was selected for Australia’s Test squad.
A Dream Debut and the Road to Greatness
In his debut Test in Sri Lanka, Lyon made an immediate impact by dismissing Kumar Sangakkara with his very first ball. Brendan revealed,
“We couldn’t afford overseas trips, so Nathan’s first overseas journey was for his debut Test. Our parents, though, always supported us, driving long distances to ensure we could play.”
