Former Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson has shared his views on the heated exchange between 19-year-old Sam Konstas and Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah during the Sydney Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. While Australia eventually clinched the series 3-1, the incident has sparked widespread discussion.

The Verbal Clash That Backfired
The altercation occurred in the final minutes of Day 1, with Konstas chirping at Bumrah from the non-striker’s end. The Indian bowler, unimpressed with the teenager’s remarks, responded firmly. Moments later, Bumrah dismissed Usman Khawaja and made a pointed celebration directed at Konstas. The Indian team joined in the charged moment, leading Australian coach Andrew McDonald to label the act as “intimidating.”
However, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir dismissed these claims, stating, “Cricket is a tough sport played by tough men. There’s no room for being soft.”
Johnson’s Critique of Konstas’ Timing
In his column for The Nightly, Johnson reflected on the incident, pointing out that Konstas may have misjudged the situation.
“Konstas’ inexperience was evident when he inserted himself into a confrontation he probably should have avoided. Khawaja, with his experience, would have been better equipped to handle such moments. The young opener had good intentions but picked the wrong time for such engagement,” Johnson wrote.
The Challenges of Engaging Bowlers
Johnson emphasized the risks of engaging in verbal battles with bowlers, noting that the odds often favor the bowler.
“In a contest between a batsman and a bowler, the latter usually has the upper hand. A single poor shot or an exceptional delivery can lead to a dismissal, followed by celebrations from the fielding side. For a batsman, engaging in banter requires sharp focus, as any lapse could be costly,” he explained.
India’s “Two Against 11” Mindset
Johnson also highlighted India’s aggressive approach during the series, where they aimed to create an “us vs. them” mentality on the field.
“The Indian team seemed to adopt a ‘two against 11’ mindset, trying to isolate and pressure the Australian batters. However, this strategy didn’t fully succeed, as rookies like Konstas and Beau Webster stood their ground and proved their worth,” Johnson remarked.
A Learning Moment for Konstas
The former pacer suggested that this incident could serve as a valuable lesson for the young Australian opener.
“I wonder if Khawaja or the senior players had a word with Konstas afterward, advising him on how to handle such situations better in the future,” Johnson added.
The Bigger Picture
While the series win reinforced Australia’s dominance, the fiery exchanges and intense competition showcased the passion and grit of both teams. For Konstas, the incident might be a stepping stone in his journey to becoming a seasoned cricketer, learning when and how to pick his battles on the field.
