Matthew Hayden’s “Brotherly” Advice to Rohit Sharma: Energy and Intent Key to Rediscovering Form

December 16, 2024

Renowned Australian batter Matthew Hayden has shared valuable advice for Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, who has been struggling to find his rhythm in red-ball cricket. Hayden, known for his aggressive batting style, believes that Rohit, a naturally free-flowing batter, needs to bring back his positive intent and energy to overcome his current slump.

Rohit’s Recent Struggles in Test Cricket

Rohit Sharma has faced criticism for his recent performances, especially against pace bowlers. In an attempt to strengthen the team’s lineup, he sacrificed his opening slot for KL Rahul in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy and moved to bat at the number 6 position—a role he is not unfamiliar with, as he debuted at this spot in Test cricket.

However, this strategic shift has not yielded results. During the Adelaide Test, Rohit failed to make an impact, scoring just 3 and 6 in the two innings. Over his last 12 Test innings, including matches against Bangladesh and New Zealand, he has managed only 142 runs at a dismal average of 11.83, with a single half-century to his name.

Hayden’s Perspective: A Return to Natural Style

Speaking on Star Sports, Hayden emphasized the importance of Rohit embracing his natural game. Highlighting Rohit’s past success, including his record-breaking double centuries in ODIs, Hayden said:

“When I think of Rohit Sharma, I picture a free-scoring batsman. His ability to dominate in limited-overs cricket is unmatched. But in recent times, he seems to have lost that spark.”

Hayden advised that defensive play would not suit Rohit’s natural style. Instead, he urged the Indian captain to approach the game with renewed energy and intent.

“For Rohit Sharma’s sake, he needs to channel great intent and energy into his game. When I look back at the Adelaide Test, he seemed a bit sluggish. If I were his partner, I’d say, ‘Don’t focus on defending the ball—stay reactive and ready for the fight.’ His natural game will follow if he approaches the crease with positivity.”

Two “Trigger Words” for Success

The Australian legend suggested Rohit use two key words—energy and intent—as mental triggers to guide his preparations and restore his flow.

“Rohit, my brother, play with energy and intent. Keep these as your focus during practice and in the game. It will help you regain your rhythm,” Hayden added.

India’s Uphill Battle in Brisbane

India ended Day 1 at the Gabba on a precarious 51 for four, trailing Australia’s first-innings total by a massive 394 runs. KL Rahul, unbeaten on 33, stood firm as Rohit once again walked out at number 6 but remained yet to score. The challenge now lies in how Rohit and the Indian team respond to Australia’s dominance in the match.

Hayden’s advice could be the catalyst Rohit needs to reignite his form and lead the Indian side with confidence in the ongoing series.
