Mark Waugh Questions India’s Bold Decision to Drop Shubman Gill in Melbourne

December 26, 2024

India’s surprising decision to omit Shubman Gill from the playing XI for the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) left many puzzled, including former Australian cricketer Mark Waugh. The move, which saw all-rounder Washington Sundar brought in instead of a specialist batter, sparked widespread debate given India’s recent batting struggles.

Gill’s Exclusion Raises Eyebrows

Shubman Gill, who had been a key inclusion in earlier matches despite battling a finger injury, found himself sidelined for the crucial Boxing Day Test. Waugh, while commentating, expressed his disbelief, saying,
“When Shubman Gill hurt his finger, they were desperate to bring him in, and now they’ve booted him out, opting for an extra bowling option instead.”

The decision to replace Gill with Sundar was also criticized by former Indian coach Ravi Shastri and ex-batter Sanjay Manjrekar. Both questioned the team management’s approach, especially as India’s batting lineup has failed to breach the 300-run mark consistently throughout the series.

Gill’s Recent Form Under the Scanner

Gill’s performances in the series haven’t inspired confidence. Despite getting starts in the pink-ball Test, he failed to convert them into big scores. Dismissals to loose deliveries, including half-volleys, and his subpar average in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries have raised concerns. Additionally, he hasn’t crossed the 40-run mark in his last seven overseas Tests, which likely played a role in the decision.

Australia’s Top Order Dominates Day 1

The Boxing Day Test began on a high note for Australia, as their top four batters delivered impressive performances. Teenage debutant Sam Konstas stole the limelight, smashing a quick-fire 60 off 65 balls. Konstas even had a memorable face-off with Indian superstar Virat Kohli during his exhilarating knock.

Australia closed the day at 311/6, with Steve Smith unbeaten on 68 and captain Pat Cummins on eight. Marnus Labuschagne (72) and Usman Khawaja (57) also contributed significant scores, putting Australia in a commanding position in front of a crowd of over 87,000 fans.

India Fights Back in the Final Session

Despite a strong start from Australia, India clawed their way back into the game during the final session. Jasprit Bumrah led the charge with figures of 3/75, dismantling Australia’s middle order and removing the dangerous Travis Head for a duck.

The bowlers, who faced early punishment from the Australian batters, displayed resilience, claiming four crucial wickets late in the day to keep India in contention.

What Lies Ahead?

As Australia resumes their innings on Day 2, India will look to wrap up the tail quickly and mount a strong batting response. The spotlight will remain on India’s decision to drop Gill, a call that could prove decisive as the match unfolds.
