KL Rahul Skips England Series, Eyes Champions Trophy Return; Pant and Samson in Contention

January 10, 2025

India’s star batter KL Rahul has chosen to take a break from the upcoming limited-overs series against England, citing mental and physical fatigue after the challenging Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Rahul has communicated his decision to Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the BCCI selection committee, stating that while he won’t participate in the England series, he will be available for the Champions Trophy starting February 19.

Rest from England Series

The home series against England, beginning on January 22 in Kolkata, consists of five T20s and three ODIs. This series holds added importance as it serves as preparation for the Champions Trophy, where India will play its matches in Dubai while the tournament’s host, Pakistan, will stage the other games.

A BCCI insider confirmed Rahul’s decision: “He has requested a break for the England series but has assured availability for the Champions Trophy.”

Stellar Start in Australia, But a Mixed Finish

Rahul’s performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was a bright spot in India’s otherwise underwhelming campaign. The right-handed batter scored 276 runs in 10 innings at an average of 30.66, making him the third-highest scorer for India.

Rahul began the series batting at No. 6 but was promoted to open the innings after Rohit Sharma had to miss a match due to personal reasons. Rahul impressed with disciplined batting in the Perth Test, securing his place at the top order for the remainder of the series. However, his form dipped in the latter stages, contributing to India losing the final two Tests and conceding the series 1-3.

Champions Trophy Selection Dilemma

Rahul’s spot in the Champions Trophy squad is not guaranteed, as competition heats up between him, Rishabh Pant, and Sanju Samson for the wicketkeeper-batter role. While Rahul remains a leading contender, Pant and Samson are making strong cases.

Pant, though inconsistent in limited-overs cricket, was preferred over Rahul in India’s last ODI against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Samson’s explosive recent performances in T20Is have bolstered his chances of securing a place in the squad.

Domestic Cricket and Future Plans

Rahul has also opted out of Karnataka’s matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and it is uncertain if he will participate in the Ranji Trophy. Head coach Gautam Gambhir has emphasized the importance of domestic cricket for Indian players, especially following the team’s disappointing series loss in Australia.

As the competition for the Champions Trophy squad intensifies, all eyes will be on KL Rahul’s return and how the selectors weigh his experience against the form of his competitors.
