KKR Eyes Jacques Kallis to Replace Gautam Gambhir as Mentor
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are considering a significant change in their coaching lineup following Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as the head coach of the Indian cricket team. Gambhir, who led KKR to their third IPL title in 2024, has taken over the national team after Rahul Dravid’s tenure ended post the T20 World Cup 2024 triumph. This development leaves KKR without their influential mentor, prompting the franchise to explore new options for the 2025 season.

Gambhir’s new role with the Indian team sees him preparing for the upcoming T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka, marking the beginning of his tenure. His departure from KKR, coupled with reports that assistant coach Abhishek Nayar might join him in the national setup, has intensified KKR’s search for a fresh coaching strategy.
Among the names being considered, legendary South African cricketer Jacques Kallis has emerged as a prominent candidate. Kallis, a familiar face in the KKR camp, played a pivotal role during his playing days, helping the team secure IPL titles in 2012 and 2014 under Gambhir’s captaincy. Post-retirement, Kallis served as KKR’s batting consultant in 2015 and later as head coach, a position he held until 2019 before stepping down to join the South African national team as their batting consultant.
A report by The Telegraph highlighted Kallis as a potential replacement for Gambhir, noting his strong ties and successful history with the franchise. “The franchise is also on the lookout for a replacement for Gambhir, who was key to its third IPL crown this year. The name of legendary South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis, who had coached KKR in 2019, is also doing the rounds,” the report stated.
Kallis’ potential return to KKR brings a sense of familiarity and continuity, given his previous coaching stint and deep understanding of the team’s dynamics. His strategic acumen and experience could be instrumental in guiding KKR to further success in the IPL.
As KKR prepares for the 2025 season, the decision on the new mentor will be crucial. The franchise is keen on maintaining the momentum gained under Gambhir’s mentorship and ensuring that the team continues to perform at the highest level. Whether Kallis will indeed make a comeback remains to be seen, but his potential appointment is already generating excitement among fans and stakeholders alike.
