Former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli’s recent public appearances have raised significant concerns about his deteriorating health. The ex-batsman, once celebrated for his talent, has been battling severe health and addiction issues, prompting members of the 1983 World Cup-winning team to offer their assistance—but with a crucial stipulation.

Concerns Sparked by Emotional Public Appearance
Kambli’s fragile condition became a topic of discussion following his appearance at a memorial event for legendary coach Ramakant Achrekar. A video from the event went viral, showing Kambli clinging emotionally to his childhood friend and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar. Despite the growing crowd, Kambli appeared reluctant to let go of Tendulkar’s hand, a moment that left fans and former teammates deeply worried.
This was not the first time Kambli’s struggles had surfaced. In a separate video that circulated in August, the former cricketer was seen struggling to walk, further fueling concerns about his health.
“He Has Severe Health Issues,” Says Close Associate
Speaking to The Times of India, former first-class umpire Marcus Couto, who shares a close relationship with Kambli, confirmed the seriousness of his condition. “He has multiple severe health issues,” Couto said. He also highlighted Kambli’s struggles with addiction, revealing that he had undergone rehabilitation 14 times.
“There’s no point in sending him to rehab again—he’s been through it multiple times. Thrice, we took him to a rehab center in Vasai,” Couto shared, adding that he and his brother Ricky visited Kambli at his Bandra home in August to express their concern.
1983 World Cup Squad Steps In
In an unexpected show of support, members of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team have come forward, offering financial assistance to help Kambli recover. However, their help comes with a condition: Kambli must demonstrate a commitment to his recovery by voluntarily enrolling in a rehabilitation program.
“Kapil (Dev) made it clear that we’re ready to help him financially if he goes to rehab. But he has to take the first step and check in himself,” said former India fast bowler Balwinder Singh Sandhu. Sandhu emphasized that once Kambli begins treatment, the 1983 squad would cover the expenses, regardless of the duration required.
A History of Support
The 1983 World Cup heroes have a history of rallying together in times of need. In the past, they provided financial and emotional support to former opener and coach Anshuman Gaekwad during his battle with cancer. Their willingness to help Kambli reflects the enduring camaraderie and solidarity within the group.
As Kambli’s struggles continue to draw attention, the cricketing fraternity hopes he will take the necessary steps to address his health challenges, allowing him to regain control of his life with the support of his former teammates.
