Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has urged the team’s top-order batters to step up and deliver strong performances as India prepares to face Australia in the fourth Test at Melbourne, starting next week. With the five-match series tied at 1-1, Jadeja emphasized the importance of a solid foundation from the batting lineup to alleviate pressure on the lower order.

The third Test in Brisbane ended in a rain-affected draw, exposing vulnerabilities in India’s top order. Despite the struggles, Jadeja played a pivotal role by scoring a crucial 77 runs in the first innings, helping India avoid a follow-on. However, he stressed that the team cannot always rely on lower-order contributions.
“When playing abroad, especially in challenging conditions like Australia and South Africa, the top order’s role becomes critical,” Jadeja remarked during a press interaction at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. “If they fail to provide a strong start, the pressure shifts to the middle and lower order. We need them to step up in this match. A collective effort from the batting unit will significantly boost our chances.”
Opportunity to Retain the Series
Jadeja expressed satisfaction with the team’s position heading into the final two matches, noting that India is well-placed to secure their third consecutive series victory in Australia.
“The next two games will be decisive,” he said. “Winning just one of them would allow us to retain the series. Having won the last two series here, it’s a great opportunity to make history again. This match will be crucial.”
Reflecting on Ashwin’s Absence
Jadeja also touched on the absence of veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who announced his retirement following the third Test. While acknowledging the loss of Ashwin’s experience, Jadeja expressed confidence in India’s pool of talented cricketers.
“We will definitely miss Ashwin’s experience and skill, but India has no shortage of talent,” Jadeja commented. “This is a chance for a young player to step up and prove themselves on the big stage.”
Looking Ahead
With matches in Melbourne and Sydney still to come, Jadeja’s call for a cohesive batting performance and confidence in the team’s depth will be crucial as India seeks to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The Boxing Day Test promises to be a defining moment in what has already been a tightly contested series.
