Former England cricketer Isa Guha has publicly apologised for her controversial comment on India’s star pacer and Test vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah during her commentary on the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Guha, who is part of Fox Cricket’s commentary team, issued an on-air apology after facing backlash on social media for referring to Bumrah as the “MVP – Most Valuable Primate” during Day 2 of the Gabba Test.

The Controversial Comment
While praising Bumrah’s crucial role in India’s bowling attack, Guha remarked, “He is the one that’s going to do all the talking for India and why so much focus was on him in the build-up to this Test match and whether he would be fit. He needs some support though.” However, the use of the term “primate” sparked outrage among fans, with some drawing parallels to the infamous “Monkey-gate” controversy involving Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds during the 2008 Sydney Test.
On-Air Apology
Addressing the controversy before the start of Day 3 at the Gabba, Guha expressed regret over her choice of words. “Yesterday in commentary, I used a word that can be interpreted in many ways. I’d like to apologise for any offence caused,” she said. “I hold myself to very high standards when it comes to empathy and respect. If you listen to the full transcript, my intention was to praise one of India’s greatest players, someone I deeply admire.”
Guha further clarified her position, saying, “I was trying to highlight the magnitude of his achievements but used the wrong word. I am deeply sorry. As someone of South Asian heritage, I hope people recognise there was no malice intended. I sincerely regret any hurt caused and hope this hasn’t overshadowed what has been an incredible Test match so far.”
Ravi Shastri Defends Guha
Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri commended Guha’s courage to issue a live apology. “Brave woman, to apologise on live television takes some steel,” Shastri remarked. “People make mistakes; we’re all human. Sometimes, in the heat of the moment, words slip out. As far as I’m concerned, the matter is closed. Let’s move on.”
Jasprit Bumrah: The Lone Warrior
Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah has been India’s standout performer in the Gabba Test, consistently taking wickets despite limited support from the rest of the bowling attack. However, centuries from Travis Head and Steve Smith in Australia’s first innings have put the hosts in a dominant position.
Guha’s apology serves as a reminder of the sensitivity required in commentary, and her swift action has been appreciated by many, including cricketing veterans like Shastri. The focus now shifts back to the action on the field as the Test match unfolds.
