As Virat Kohli approaches his 36th year, questions loom over his place in India’s Test squad for the upcoming five-match series in England, set to begin in June. Former Australian captain Ian Chappell has urged Kohli to improve his consistency and curb his controversial on-field behavior, particularly after recent incidents during the Melbourne Test against Australia.

Kohli’s Struggles with Form
Kohli’s performance in 2024 has been underwhelming, scoring only 417 runs in 10 Tests at an average of 24. With no Test matches scheduled for India until the England tour, Kohli’s preparation will rely heavily on the IPL 2025, which is far from ideal for an overseas red-ball series. Despite his struggles, Kohli’s vast experience in English conditions makes him a likely candidate for the squad. However, Chappell emphasized that Kohli must regain form and focus on guiding younger players while avoiding unnecessary theatrics on the field.
“Kohli’s experience in England is invaluable, and of the two veterans (Kohli and Rohit Sharma), he has a better chance of a resurgence. But his form must improve, and he needs to distance himself from antics like the shoulder bump with Sam Konstas during the MCG Test,” Chappell wrote in his ESPNcricinfo column.
Chappell also warned of the significant void Kohli and Rohit would leave in India’s Test lineup if both were to retire, particularly given the challenging nature of the England tour.
Rohit Sharma’s Test Career in Doubt
Chappell expressed skepticism about Rohit Sharma’s Test future, pointing to his age (nearly 38) and technical struggles. With the demanding five-Test series on the horizon, Chappell suggested that Rohit’s time in the longest format might be nearing its end.
“Rohit’s potential absence raises two major questions for India: Who will open the innings, and who will take over as captain? KL Rahul is a solid option as an opener, but the leadership role poses a bigger challenge,” Chappell explained.
Leadership Dilemma: The Bumrah Factor
Jasprit Bumrah, India’s vice-captain, has demonstrated his leadership skills and brilliance with the ball, notably during India’s historic series win in Australia. However, his frequent injuries and workload management have made it difficult for selectors to rely on him as a full-time captain.
“Bumrah is an outstanding bowler and has shown promise as a skipper, but his availability is not always guaranteed. India needs additional leadership support if they are to remain competitive,” Chappell added.
Tough Decisions Await the Selectors
India’s selectors face a challenging task in managing the transitions of star players like Rohit and Kohli. Balancing their experience with the need to groom a new generation of leaders will be crucial to India’s success, especially with high-profile tours like England on the horizon. As the cricketing world awaits the BCCI’s decision, the future of India’s Test lineup hangs in the balance.
