New Delhi: Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has identified Rishabh Pant as India’s premier red-ball batter after Virat Kohli and expects him to play a significant role in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. The high-stakes series begins on Friday in Perth, with India eyeing a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final for the third consecutive time.

Pant, known for his fearless and attacking approach, has built an impressive reputation in Test cricket, particularly against Australia. His heroic performances, including the memorable innings at Brisbane in 2021, have made him a key figure in India’s success against the Aussies.
Ganguly’s Vote of Confidence
Ganguly, who worked closely with Pant during their time at the Delhi Capitals in the IPL, praised the 26-year-old for his exceptional talent in the longest format of the game.
“Pant is a generational talent in red-ball cricket. Look at the innings he has played in England, Australia, and South Africa, and you’ll see his incredible impact. After Kohli, he’s India’s next-best red-ball batter. I believe he will have a massive impact in this series,” Ganguly told Revsportz.
While Pant is yet to fully establish himself in white-ball cricket, his prowess in Tests has never been in doubt. Ganguly pointed to his ability to deliver in challenging situations as a hallmark of his greatness.
Recent Form and Key Performances
Pant has been in stellar form, as seen in recent Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand. He amassed 422 runs in five matches this year at an average of 46.88 and an impressive strike rate of 86.47. One of his standout performances came during the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru, where his aggressive 99 gave India a fighting chance despite being under pressure.
India and Australia Squads
India’s squad for the series includes experienced players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin, along with emerging talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sarfaraz Khan. Australia, led by Pat Cummins, features a formidable lineup, including Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, and Mitchell Starc.
Series Preview
As India prepares to face the WTC defending champions, all eyes will be on Pant to replicate his past heroics. His fearless batting style and ability to counter-attack under pressure make him a critical player for India in this five-match series.
The stage is set for another thrilling chapter in the India-Australia rivalry, with Pant expected to be at the forefront of India’s campaign.
