Former Pakistan Captains Criticize India’s Reluctance to Play in 2025 Champions Trophy

November 11, 2024

As the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy approaches, tensions are mounting over India’s hesitance to travel to Pakistan for the tournament. Former Pakistani cricket icons, including Javed Miandad and Inzamam-ul-Haq, have voiced strong objections to India’s stance, expressing frustration with the decision. According to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) official Mohsin Naqvi, the ICC informed Pakistan that India might decline to play on Pakistani soil, a move that has sparked significant backlash.

Javed Miandad, known for his outspoken nature, suggested that Pakistan should consider boycotting matches with India. While many acknowledge the financial boost that India-Pakistan matches bring, Miandad believes Pakistan can thrive without these encounters. “It’s disappointing that this is even an issue. If we don’t play India, Pakistan cricket will still flourish. Let’s see how ICC events fare without an India-Pakistan clash,” Miandad told PTI.

Rumors have circulated that India’s proposed “hybrid model,” in which their matches would be held in the UAE or Sri Lanka, may be considered by the ICC. However, there has been no official confirmation. A similar arrangement was made during the 2023 Asia Cup, where Pakistan hosted the event but India’s games were held in Sri Lanka.

Inzamam and Rashid Latif Also Criticize India’s Approach

Inzamam-ul-Haq emphasized that Pakistan’s Champions Trophy hosting should not be overshadowed by India’s refusal to participate. He pointed out that other nations, including Australia, New Zealand, and England, have successfully toured Pakistan for cricket series. “It’s unfortunate that India is holding back on such an important event. Pakistan would warmly welcome the Indian team without any issues,” Inzamam stated.

Rashid Latif echoed these sentiments, labeling India’s stance as purely political. “When so many other teams are playing in Pakistan without issues, it’s disappointing that India is refusing. This decision goes beyond cricket and should be addressed in the sports world,” he said.

The ICC is expected to finalize the schedule soon, with the tournament venues yet to be confirmed.
