Focus on Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill as India Prepares for Tour Game

November 29, 2024

Canberra: The Indian cricket team resumed their preparations with high spirits at the Manuka Oval on Friday after a three-day break. Despite cloudy skies and intermittent drizzle, the team was eager to get back on the field ahead of their two-day tour match against the Prime Minister’s XI, starting Saturday.

The practice pitches were initially covered due to the weather, but that didn’t deter the players. Skipper Rohit Sharma and young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal were among the first to head to the nets, determined to make the most of the session.

Rohit Sharma’s Return to Action

One of India’s primary goals is to get captain Rohit Sharma back to full match readiness. Having missed the first Test due to the birth of his child, Rohit had only his second net session on the tour. Though his stint at the crease wasn’t long, he also did a few laps alongside Rishabh Pant to ease back into rhythm.

Assistant coach Abhishek Nayar expressed the team’s positive mood with Rohit’s return. “Rohit brings energy and laughter to the group, and though he wasn’t with us earlier, his presence has always been felt. His return has boosted the team’s morale,” Nayar said.

Shubman Gill’s Fitness Test

Another focus area for India is monitoring Shubman Gill’s recovery from a left thumb fracture. The young batter had an encouraging net session, gradually building confidence by progressing from throwdowns to facing pacers.

“He looked comfortable in the nets and seems likely to play tomorrow’s match,” Nayar added. “The physio will evaluate him post-session, but his batting today was a positive sign for his participation in Adelaide.”

Pink Ball Practice Key for India

With the pink ball Test in Adelaide looming, adapting to the nuances of the pink Kookaburra is India’s priority. Nayar downplayed concerns about India’s relative inexperience with the pink ball compared to Australia, emphasizing the importance of focusing on their own preparations.

“It’s still a cricket ball; the effort is to adjust to its color and lacquer. We’ve been practicing with the pink ball since Perth, and the team is using these days to acclimatize,” Nayar said.

While there has been speculation about Australia’s advantage in day/night Tests, the Indian team is steering clear of such discussions, focusing instead on building their own game plan.

Managing Pacers’ Workload

With an eye on the second Test, India is also keeping track of their pacers’ workload. Despite the short practice session due to rain, Nayar feels the bowlers are well-rested and ready.

“The early finish in Perth gave the team three extra days to recover,” Nayar explained. “The plan is for each pacer to bowl at least one spell during the tour game to ensure they are prepared for Adelaide.”

Looking Ahead

India is optimistic about fine-tuning their skills in the two-day match despite weather challenges. With Rohit Sharma back in the fold, Shubman Gill showing signs of recovery, and the team working hard to adapt to the pink ball, the preparations are in full swing as they aim to build momentum for the upcoming Adelaide Test.
