FIFA Seeks Dialogue Amid Busy Calendar Dispute

August 2, 2024

On Thursday, FIFA announced that it has extended an invitation to FIFPRO Europe and the European Leagues for discussions regarding the ongoing dispute over the football calendar. This follows a complaint filed on July 23 by FIFPRO and the European Leagues, which represents over a thousand clubs from 33 countries. The complaint, lodged with the European Commission, accuses FIFA of misusing its authority with regard to the international match calendar, claiming that FIFA’s actions have negatively impacted national leagues and player welfare. The complaint also highlights concerns over a perceived conflict of interest due to FIFA’s dual role as regulator and competition organizer.

A FIFA spokesperson stated, “FIFA has reiterated its invitation to meet and discuss the calendar with the World Leagues Association and FIFPRO, as there was no response to our letter dated May 10, 2024.” The spokesperson emphasized FIFA’s commitment to finding a constructive resolution, noting that legal action is not the preferred path. “FIFA is dedicated to balancing the interests of global football, including player protection, and aims to make decisions that benefit the sport worldwide,” the spokesperson added.

Criticism of FIFA includes claims of insufficient consultation over recent changes, such as the introduction of a 32-team Club World Cup. The inaugural edition of this expanded tournament is scheduled for June and July next year in the United States, featuring 12 European clubs. This scheduling could disrupt the close-season break for many top European players, just a year before the expanded 48-team World Cup in North America.
