“Expect a Battle”: Alphonso Davies Fires Warning to Messi’s Argentina Ahead of Copa America Showdown

July 9, 2024

The Copa America is heating up as we approach the semi-finals, featuring high-stakes clashes and powerhouse teams. World champions Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, will take on underdog Canada on Tuesday in New Jersey. The following day, Uruguay, fresh off a dramatic shoot-out victory over Brazil, faces a red-hot Colombia in Charlotte.

Both Argentina and Uruguay are vying to become the most successful nation in Copa America history, each with 15 titles. Colombia, boasting an impressive 27-game unbeaten streak, is looking to add to their lone title from 2001, while Canada, debuting in the tournament, aims to continue their Cinderella story.

Argentina advanced to the semi-finals after a tense penalty shoot-out against Ecuador, thanks to the heroics of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez. Despite not hitting their peak form, Lionel Scaloni’s squad remains the clear favorite against Canada. However, Canadian coach Jesse Marsch has quickly transformed his team with a high-energy, pressing style that has delivered remarkable results.

Marsch, who took over in mid-May, has seen his side overcome a strong Venezuela team in the quarter-finals, winning on penalties after a thrilling match. Now, they face a formidable challenge in Messi and Argentina.

“It’s going to take everything,” said Bayern Munich wing-back Alphonso Davies. “We’re hungrier than ever, we expect a battle—as they should.”

Despite the daunting task, Marsch insists Canada will stick to their aggressive, attacking playstyle. “The game against Argentina will have to be the best we’ve ever played… We’re not going to sit back and just try to defend,” he said.

Argentina’s squad, largely unchanged since their 2022 World Cup victory, features a strong midfield and a solid defense led by Lisandro Martinez. Although Messi has been struggling with a hamstring strain, striker Lautaro Martinez has stepped up, scoring four goals in the tournament.

In the other semi-final, Colombia continues to impress under coach Nestor Lorenzo, with playmaker James Rodriguez rediscovering his form. Rodriguez has been pivotal, providing two assists and scoring a penalty in their 5-0 quarter-final victory over Panama.

Uruguay, energized after their gritty win over Brazil, faces injury concerns and suspensions but remains confident under veteran coach Marcelo Bielsa. Known for his direct, hard-running style, Bielsa’s team will aim to match Colombia’s pace and creativity, particularly from winger Luis Diaz.

“The match against Colombia will be just as demanding as playing Brazil,” Bielsa said. “But we are confident we can play on an equal footing with any opponent.”

The stage is set for two thrilling semi-finals, with the winners advancing to the Copa America final in Miami on July 14.
