After retiring from all forms of cricket earlier this year at the age of 39, former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik has transitioned smoothly into new roles, from commentary to playing in cricket’s fastest format. Currently representing the Bangla Tigers in the 2024 Abu Dhabi T10 League, Karthik continues to pursue his love for the game, exploring the unique challenges of the ultra-short format.

Versatile Career and Transition
Karthik, known for his adaptability throughout his cricketing career, excelled in multiple roles. Whether opening the batting, finishing games for India, or donning the wicketkeeper’s gloves when required, the Tamil Nadu star demonstrated versatility and skill. Post-retirement, he made a name for himself in the commentary booth before stepping into the T10 arena to experience cricket in its fastest form.
Excited by the Quick Format
Speaking about his experience in the T10 league, Karthik expressed enthusiasm for the format’s dynamic nature.
“It’s a good format. It’s short and quick, and you see a lot of aggressive batting. It’s really fun,” Karthik shared in a press release.
While he hasn’t played a match yet, he admitted to being intrigued by the game’s pace. “Being on the bench and watching the games, you can see how fast everything happens,” he added.
Limited Indian Participation in T10
Karthik is among the few Indian players to compete in the Abu Dhabi T10 League, thanks to the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) rules restricting active IPL players from participating in overseas franchise leagues. However, the rule allows retired Indian cricketers to play in such tournaments.
“I respect the BCCI’s mandate. It keeps the IPL unique and special. Retired players can move on and explore other leagues like the T10. We’ve seen players like Robin Uthappa and Ambati Rayudu come here, and I’m sure they’ve enjoyed the experience,” Karthik remarked.
Bangla Tigers’ Struggles in the League
Despite Karthik’s excitement, the Bangla Tigers have faced a tough season, winning just two of their six games and currently sitting in ninth place on the table. With slim chances of making the playoffs, Karthik remains focused on the remaining matches, looking to make the most of his time in the league.
Future with Royal Challengers Bengaluru
In addition to his T10 stint, Karthik is preparing for his role as batting coach and mentor for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL). Reflecting on the two roles, he highlighted the differences between the T10 and T20 formats.
“I am looking forward to the remaining games here. But I don’t see much similarity between my role in T10 and what I’ll do in the IPL. Each format demands a different approach,” he concluded.
With his versatile cricketing journey continuing in new formats and roles, Dinesh Karthik remains a valuable contributor to the game even after retirement.
