Indian Grandmaster D Gukesh, who recently became the youngest World Chess Champion, was welcomed with great enthusiasm upon his return to Chennai. Gukesh defeated China’s reigning champion, Ding Liren, in an intense 14-game series held in Singapore. The 18-year-old chess prodigy was felicitated at Velammal Nexus, his school in Chennai, where he addressed the media and shared insights about his journey to becoming a world champion.

A Grand Reception
Gukesh’s homecoming was marked by jubilant celebrations, including cheering crowds, traditional dancers, and a rousing welcome from students of Velammal Vidyalaya, a school known for producing chess champions. Officials from the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) and the All India Chess Federation (AICF) were also present to honor his extraordinary achievement. Expressing his gratitude, Gukesh said, “It’s amazing to see the support and love from everyone here. You’ve given me so much energy.”
Overcoming Challenges with Mental Resilience
During a press conference, Gukesh opened up about the mental and emotional challenges he faced during the championship. He particularly credited South African mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton for helping him navigate the high-pressure environment of the tournament.
“In World Championships, you face immense mental and emotional struggles. Paddy’s guidance and techniques were crucial for me to stay composed and focused,” Gukesh shared.
He recalled the difficult moments after losing the first and 12th games, both pivotal in the series. “Those losses were hard to handle, but Paddy’s teachings helped me recover and keep moving forward,” he said.
Following in the Footsteps of Viswanathan Anand
By securing the title, Gukesh has become only the second Indian to win the World Chess Championship, following in the footsteps of the legendary Viswanathan Anand. The young Grandmaster’s victory is a significant milestone for Indian chess, reflecting the country’s growing prominence in the global chess arena.
A Moment of Pride
The celebratory atmosphere in Chennai highlighted the pride and joy of the nation. Gukesh’s achievements have inspired countless aspiring chess players across India. Reflecting on the support he received, Gukesh added, “This victory means a lot to me and to the people of India. I’m truly grateful for all the encouragement.”
Gukesh’s triumph serves as a testament to his hard work, determination, and the collective support of his coaches, family, and well-wishers. As the youngest world champion, his journey continues to inspire the next generation of chess enthusiasts.
