Clarke and Finch Laud Rohit’s Bold Move to Elevate Rahul in Adelaide

December 5, 2024

Former Australian cricketers Michael Clarke and Aaron Finch have praised Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s decision to allow KL Rahul to open in the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Adelaide. The move comes after Rahul’s impactful performance in the first Test in Perth, where he silenced critics with his resilience at the crease.

Rahul Shines in Perth Test

Facing criticism from fans and pundits, KL Rahul delivered an impressive performance during the series opener. In the first innings, he scored a gritty 26 off 74 balls as India managed only 150. However, the team’s bowlers, led by stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah, skittled Australia for 104.

In the second innings, Rahul partnered with Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top of the order to build a commanding platform. Rahul scored 77 off 176 balls, while Jaiswal hit a masterful 161. Virat Kohli followed with a century, helping India declare at 487/6 and set an imposing target of 534. Australia faltered in the chase, bowled out for 238, with Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj claiming three wickets each.

Rohit Takes Middle-Order Role

Returning to the squad after paternity leave, Rohit Sharma opted to bat at No. 5 in the second Test, confirming that Rahul would continue opening alongside Jaiswal. During India’s warm-up match against the Australian Prime Minister’s XI, Rohit practiced in the middle order, signaling a tactical shift to strengthen the batting lineup.

Clarke and Finch Weigh In

Michael Clarke and Aaron Finch, speaking on ESPNcricinfo, backed Rohit’s decision to adapt his role for the team’s benefit.

“I think it’s a smart move,” Clarke said. “Rahul showed his quality in Perth, and keeping him at the top makes sense. Rohit batting at No. 5 could be a game-changer, especially in Australian conditions. He’s aggressive against spin and will look to dominate Nathan Lyon in the middle overs.”

Clarke also praised Rohit’s flexibility, noting that his ability to adapt to team needs is a hallmark of strong leadership.

Finch echoed Clarke’s sentiments, particularly highlighting the strategic advantage of Rohit’s decision in a pink-ball Test. “In Adelaide, the new ball is crucial, and having someone like Rohit come in later could stabilize the innings. He can counter a softer ball effectively, and his aggression in the middle order is a huge asset.”

Rahul: A “Scary” Prospect for Australia

Finch commended Rahul’s performance in challenging conditions during the Perth Test, especially his composure in the first innings. “Rahul looked the best of all Indian batters in tough conditions. If he continues opening, it’s a scary prospect for Australia,” Finch stated.

India Aims to Extend Lead

With the second Test starting on December 6 in Adelaide, India will be looking to build on their 1-0 lead. The strategic adjustments in the batting order, coupled with a confident bowling attack, set the stage for another intense battle in the series.
