Bihar’s Suman Kumar Scripts History with 10-Wicket Haul and Hat-Trick in Cooch Behar Trophy

December 2, 2024

Bihar’s U-19 left-arm spinner, Suman Kumar, delivered an unforgettable performance during a Cooch Behar Trophy match against Rajasthan, claiming all 10 wickets in an innings, including a stunning hat-trick. The match, played at the Moin Ul Haq Stadium in Patna, saw Suman bowl a marathon spell that left the opposition reeling.

A Spell to Remember

Hailing from Samastipur, Bihar, the same district as rising cricket talent Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Suman announced himself with a spell of remarkable control and wicket-taking prowess. After Rajasthan’s openers stitched a half-century partnership, Suman provided the breakthrough that sparked a dramatic collapse.

With the score at 82/1, the young spinner ran riot, reducing Rajasthan to 82/5 in a matter of overs. His hat-trick came during this devastating phase, as he dismantled the middle order with surgical precision. Out of his 33.5 overs, an astonishing 20 were maidens, underscoring how unplayable he was. Rajasthan crumbled to 182 all out, giving Bihar a commanding lead after the hosts had posted a mammoth 467 in their first innings, powered by centuries from Dipesh Gupta and Prithvi Raj.

Rare Feat in Domestic Cricket

Suman’s 10-wicket haul places him among an elite group of bowlers to achieve this rare milestone in Indian domestic cricket. Earlier in the season, Haryana pacer Anshul Kamboj had recorded a similar feat in the Ranji Trophy, highlighting the growing pool of talent in India’s domestic setup. While Suman’s effort came at the U-19 level, it has surely drawn the attention of selectors for senior sides.

Rajasthan’s Resilient Comeback

Despite the early setback, Rajasthan staged an impressive fightback in their third innings. Captain Toshit hit a century, while opener Parth Yadav scored an outstanding double century to help their team post 410/5 by the end of play.

Suman bowled another extended spell of 49 overs in Rajasthan’s second innings. Although he maintained an economy rate of just 1.80, he managed only one wicket, proving how the pitch and conditions had shifted in the visitors’ favor.

A Star in the Making

Suman Kumar’s record-breaking performance has firmly established him as a bowler to watch. With incredible guile, control, and resilience across lengthy spells, the young spinner has shown he has what it takes to excel at higher levels of the game. His remarkable 10-wicket haul, including the hat-trick, will remain a highlight of this Cooch Behar Trophy season and a testament to the talent emerging from Bihar’s cricketing ranks.
