Ben Stokes Skips IPL to Extend England Career

November 27, 2024

Christchurch, New Zealand: England Test captain Ben Stokes has revealed his decision to forgo participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions to prioritize his international cricket career. Stokes, who has been dealing with knee issues, opted out of the 2025 IPL edition to manage his workload effectively, focusing on representing England during the latter stages of his career.

Putting Country Over Cash

Stokes, one of the biggest names in cricket, previously signed a $2 million deal with Chennai Super Kings but has chosen to sit out this year’s IPL to ensure longevity in his cricketing career. Speaking to the BBC ahead of England’s Test series against New Zealand, Stokes emphasized the importance of maintaining his fitness.

“I want to play cricket for as long as I possibly can,” said Stokes. “Looking after my body and managing my schedule are crucial. Prioritizing which games I play and when I play them is part of that. My main focus is to keep wearing the England shirt for as long as possible.”

A Challenging Start to England’s Test Series

As England prepares to face New Zealand in Christchurch, they are set to hand a Test debut to Jacob Bethell, who will bat at No. 3 despite not having played this role in first-class cricket. This unexpected move comes after wicketkeeper Jordan Cox fractured his thumb during a training session. Cox, who was due to make his Test debut, was a replacement for Jamie Smith, currently on paternity leave.

Stokes expressed sympathy for Cox’s unfortunate injury, saying, “It’s heartbreaking for anyone to sustain an injury, especially when it happens just before making a Test debut. The team is gutted, but Jordan must feel even worse. All we can do is support him and check on his well-being.”

Contrasting Fortunes for England and New Zealand

New Zealand enters the series riding high after an impressive 3-0 victory over India, while England recently suffered a 2-1 series defeat in Pakistan. The clash promises to be a test of resilience for both sides, with England looking to regain momentum and New Zealand aiming to continue their dominant form.

Stokes’ commitment to England over lucrative IPL opportunities underscores his dedication to the national team as he seeks to balance performance and longevity in the demanding world of international cricket.
