BCCI Eyes Zaheer Khan and Balaji for Bowling Coach Role, Snubs Vinay Kumar

July 11, 2024

With Gautam Gambhir stepping in as Team India’s head coach, the BCCI is now focused on filling the bowling coach position. Sources indicate that former seamers Zaheer Khan and Lakshmipathy Balaji are the top contenders, while Vinay Kumar is not in the running.

Zaheer Khan, renowned for his impressive career with 311 Test wickets in 92 matches and a total of 610 international wickets, is a strong candidate. Balaji, with 27 wickets in eight Test matches and 34 wickets in 30 ODIs, is also being considered.

This shift in support staff comes after the term of Paras Mahambrey, the former bowling coach, concluded. The BCCI, under the leadership of secretary Jay Shah, announced Gambhir’s appointment, highlighting his extensive experience and successful stint as Kolkata Knight Riders’ team mentor in the IPL 2024, where KKR won their third title.

Jay Shah expressed his confidence in Gambhir’s ability to lead Indian cricket forward, emphasizing his firsthand experience and clear vision for the team.

Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach ended after India’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph over South Africa, marking India’s first T20 World Cup win in 17 years.
