Amelia Kerr Shines on Sydney Sixers Debut with Match-Winning Performance Against Melbourne Stars

November 8, 2024

Amelia Kerr made an immediate impact on her Sydney Sixers debut, playing a key role in their thrilling six-run win over the Melbourne Stars under the DLS method at Junction Oval. The New Zealand all-rounder, who had been sidelined due to a right quad injury, was named Player of the Match after her crucial contributions with both bat and ball.

The Sixers’ chase got off to a rocky start when Sarah Bryce was dismissed cheaply for 1, caught at first slip. However, Kerr stepped up to the challenge, combining with Ellyse Perry to guide the chase with a steady partnership. Kerr remained unbeaten on 46 from 41 balls, including five fours, while Perry finished with 48 not out off 44 balls, striking six boundaries. Their unbroken stand steered the Sixers to a successful chase of 104 for 1, as they outpaced the DLS target.

Earlier, Kerr had also shown her prowess with the ball, taking 2 for 36 in four overs, including the key scalp of Stars’ top-scorer Annabel Sutherland, who made a defiant 42. Kerr also claimed the wicket of Tess Flintoff in the final over. Sophie Ecclestone was the standout bowler for the Sixers, finishing with 3 for 19 from four overs.

Despite concerns about Kerr’s fitness after her injury in late October, the all-rounder made a successful recovery ahead of schedule and delivered a match-winning performance in her first game. She has signed a three-season deal with the Sixers, having previously played five seasons with the Brisbane Heat.

The result improves the Sixers’ record to 3-2, while the Melbourne Stars will look to bounce back from this defeat as both Melbourne teams prepare for a derby showdown on Saturday.
