Akash Deep Recalls Using Virat Kohli’s Bat During Brisbane Heroics

January 16, 2025

Akash Deep, who played a vital role in India’s first-innings fightback during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Gabba, shared an intriguing story about how he ended up using Virat Kohli’s bat for his memorable innings.

A Challenging Series for India

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy saw India clinch an early victory in Perth, taking a 1-0 lead. However, Australia dominated the remainder of the series, winning three of the next four matches to reclaim the trophy after India had held it for a decade. Despite the series slipping away, a spirited moment of resilience came during the final Test at Brisbane, with Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah delivering a game-saving 10th-wicket partnership.

Their 47-run stand not only helped India avoid the follow-on but also ensured the team escaped with a draw in rain-affected conditions. Akash Deep, batting at No. 11, contributed a crucial 31 runs off 44 balls, including a towering six off Pat Cummins that left an indelible mark on the match.

The Story Behind the Bat

Speaking to PTI about the innings, Akash Deep revealed how Virat Kohli’s bat became a part of the memorable moment.

“Everyone knows the bat with the MRF logo—it’s iconic,” Akash said. “Before I went out to bat, Virat bhaiya himself asked me, ‘Tumko bat chahiye?’ (Do you need a bat?). I immediately said, ‘Haan bhaiyya, aapka bat kaun nahi lena chahega duniya mein?’ (Yes, who in the world wouldn’t want your bat?).”

Kohli handed over the bat willingly, understanding the gravity of the moment. Akash added, “It’s not easy to ask for something like that during a match. He is so focused and in the zone, you don’t want to disturb him. But bhaiyya offered it to me on his own, which made me feel incredibly supported.”

Delivering Under Pressure

When Akash Deep joined Jasprit Bumrah, India were still 33 runs away from avoiding the follow-on. The duo’s patient batting, coupled with some aggressive strokes, helped India cross the crucial target. Akash’s cut shot over the slips and a massive six over midwicket showcased his determination and ability to handle pressure.

Reflecting on the innings, Akash credited his bond with Kohli for giving him the confidence to step up in the moment. “I’ve been around Virat bhaiya for some time now, and his support made a huge difference,” he said.

A Small Contribution, A Big Impact

Though the series didn’t go in India’s favor, Akash Deep’s innings at Brisbane remains a standout moment of grit and determination. With Kohli’s bat in hand, he not only helped India avoid a potential loss but also created a memory that will be cherished for years to come.
