AC Milan Crush Sassuolo 6-1 to Reach Italian Cup Quarter-Finals

December 4, 2024

AC Milan put in a dominant display at the San Siro on Tuesday, securing a resounding 6-1 victory over Serie B leaders Sassuolo to book their place in the Italian Cup quarter-finals. Samuel Chukwueze starred with a brace, as Milan continued their unbeaten run under new manager Paulo Fonseca, who is looking to guide the team to their first Italian Cup title since 2003.

Chukwueze’s Double Leads Milan’s Attack

Milan took control of the match early, with Chukwueze opening the scoring in the 12th minute. The Nigerian winger capitalized on his own rebound after his initial shot hit the post, bundling the ball into the net to give Milan the lead.

The hosts extended their advantage just five minutes later. A loose ball fell to Tijjani Reijnders, who made no mistake with a powerful strike from outside the box to double the lead. Sassuolo struggled to cope with the relentless Milan attacks, and it was 3-0 in the 21st minute. Chukwueze added his second of the night, finishing into the far corner after being set up by Tammy Abraham, marking his first brace since his time at Villarreal in April 2023.

Further Goals and Substitutions

Milan’s dominance continued as Ruben Loftus-Cheek surged forward and played in Rafael Leao, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner for 4-0. Fonseca took the opportunity to rest some key players, including Leao and Loftus-Cheek, making four substitutions at the break.

The second half saw more goals for Milan. Davide Calabria scored his first of the season in the 56th minute, before Sassuolo grabbed a consolation through Samuele Mulattieri shortly after. However, Milan quickly regained their advantage, with Abraham netting his fourth goal since joining on loan from Roma, finishing with a brilliant back-heel to complete the 6-1 rout.

Bologna Cruise into the Quarter-Finals

In other Italian Cup action, Bologna secured a spot in the last eight with a commanding 4-0 win over Monza. Bologna took control of the match with two goals in quick succession in the first half, with Tommaso Pobega and Riccardo Orsolini on target.

Monza, struggling near the bottom of Serie A, were hoping for a cup upset but were unable to recover. Benjamin Dominguez put the game beyond their reach in the 63rd minute, with Santiago Castro providing his third assist of the match. The pair combined again late on, as Dominguez assisted Castro to complete the 4-0 win.

Both AC Milan and Bologna will now look forward to their quarter-final fixtures, with their strong performances underscoring their ambitions in the Italian Cup this season.
