India Management Encourages Abhishek’s Aggressive Approach
Indian opener Abhishek Sharma has credited the team management for allowing him the freedom to play an aggressive brand of cricket. The Punjab batter showcased his power-hitting skills in India’s seven-wicket victory over England in the first T20 International in Kolkata, smashing eight sixes and five fours.

Abhishek, who had a sensational 46-ball century against Zimbabwe last year, initially struggled with consistency in the shortest format. However, recent scores of 50, 36, and 79 have boosted his confidence as he cements his place in the squad.
“In India, the competition for a spot in the senior team is intense,” the 24-year-old shared with reporters. “It’s easy to feel the pressure if you don’t score in three or four innings, but the captain and coach have been incredibly supportive. They remind us that they trust us to win games and encourage us to express ourselves on the field.”
Backed by Suryakumar and Gambhir
Abhishek expressed gratitude to captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir for their unwavering belief in the younger players. “When your captain and coach tell you they believe in you, it boosts your confidence and helps you back your instincts,” he said.
The left-hander revealed how his preparation for matches includes facing bowlers with similar actions to those he will encounter during games, helping him adapt quickly to different challenges.
Guided by Legends
Abhishek considers himself fortunate to have been mentored by some of cricket’s finest left-handers. Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh played a key role in shaping his mindset, while West Indies legend Brian Lara coached him during his time with Sunrisers Hyderabad. Now, under Gambhir’s guidance, Abhishek feels supported in showcasing his talent.
“They’ve all told me to trust my game and play with freedom. Having such legends believe in you is incredibly motivating,” he added.
Second T20 Awaits in Chennai
India and England will face off in the second T20 International of the five-match series in Chennai on Saturday. With his recent performances, Abhishek is eager to maintain his momentum and continue contributing to the team’s success.
As he continues to impress on the international stage, Abhishek Sharma is proving why the Indian management’s faith in him is well-placed.
