Former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan recently reflected on India’s memorable victory in the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, a moment he cherishes deeply. The tournament, held in England, saw a young Indian team, led by MS Dhoni, emerge victorious against the hosts in a rain-affected final. Dhawan, who was in sublime form throughout the competition, was named Player of the Tournament for his exceptional performance with the bat.

Dhawan’s Unforgettable Campaign

Dhawan was instrumental in India’s success, amassing 363 runs in five matches at a phenomenal average of 90.75. His standout performances included centuries against South Africa and the West Indies. Reflecting on his journey, he highlighted the joy of lifting the trophy with his teammates as one of the most cherished moments of his career.

“Winning the Champions Trophy was an incredible experience. Lifting the trophy with my teammates after such an intense tournament is something I will cherish forever. Honestly, it doesn’t get better than that!” Dhawan told The Times of India.

Kohli’s Gangnam Style Dance—A Moment to Remember

While recalling the celebrations after the final, Dhawan shared a lighthearted memory involving former captain Virat Kohli. During the post-match celebrations, Kohli entertained everyone by dancing to PSY’s viral hit Gangnam Style, a moment that left the entire team in splits.

“Another memory I’ll never forget is Virat’s Gangnam Style dance after the win—it was hilarious and had all of us laughing,” Dhawan recalled.

Kohli played a crucial role in the final, scoring a vital 48 runs in a match that was reduced to 20 overs per side due to rain. His contribution was key in helping India clinch the title.

Fond Memories of the Dressing Room

Beyond the on-field achievements, Dhawan emphasized the camaraderie and friendships built during the tournament. He spoke fondly of the time spent in the dressing room, engaging in team discussions, sharing laughter, and creating lifelong bonds.

“What stands out the most to me is the time spent in the dressing room with the team—those moments of fun, discussions, and team spirit were truly special. I miss them and will keep them in my heart forever,” he added.

With Rohit Sharma now at the helm of Indian cricket, having recently led the team to a T20 World Cup victory, Dhawan expressed his hope that the current generation can replicate the glory of 2013. The Champions Trophy triumph remains a significant milestone in Indian cricket history, and for Dhawan, it will always hold a special place in his heart.
